Arshad Nadeem's Coach Banned For Life By Pakistan's Athletics Federation

Salman Iqbal, the long serving coach of Pakistan's top athlete Arshad Nadeem, was on Sunday banned for life by the country's Athletics Federation for violating the constitution of the Punjab Athletics Association, where he holds the position of President. Under the life ban, Iqbal cannot take part in any athletics activities nor coach or hold office at any level. The violations the Pakistan Amateur Athletics Federation (PAAF) has accused Iqbal of committing by holding elections of the Punjab body occured back in August.

An inquiry committee was formed in mid-September and it recommended the ban on Iqbal on October 10, a day after his reply to the PSB came out.

The decision appears to be linked to the recent crisp reply Iqbal had sent to the state-run Pakistan Sports Board (PSB) when they asked him to explain Nadeem's poor show in the World Athletics Championship in Tokyo. PSB also demanded to know details about the expenses incurred on the javelin thrower's training and travel.

Iqbal, who has been Arshad's mentor and coach for the last few years, shocked everyone by disclosing that the Pakistan Amateur Athletics Federation had for the last one year or so disassociated itself from anything to do with Nadeem.

Iqbal apparently also ruffled feathers when he said in his reply that he had to seek financial assistance from a friend to ensure that Pakistan's top athlete was able to train in South Africa apart from help him complete his rehab after sustaining a calf muscle injury.

Madhya Pradesh Worker Collapses, Dies While Employer Scrolls Through Phone

A 45-year-old worker in Madhya Pradesh's Agar Malwa district died of a heart attack while his employer sat just a few feet away scrolling through his phone instead of helping. The tragic incident happened on Monday at the Tirupati Traders in Susner.

Rafiq Khan, who worked at the shop, suddenly clutched his chest and collapsed on his chair while working. For nearly six minutes, Khan struggled to breathe and writhed in pain. However, none of the people present, including the shop owner, stepped forward to help.

CCTV Footage Shows Lack Of Humanity

The CCTV footage of the incident has gone viral. The video showed Khan gasping for breath on his chair, while the owner looked at him occasionally but continued using his phone.

At no point during the duration of the footage was the owner seen getting up or attempting to provide any aid to Khan.

By the time the 45-year-old man was taken to a hospital, doctors declared him dead.

'Victim Forced To Lift Loads Beyond His Capacity'

Khan's family, devastated and enraged by the tragedy, reached the Susner Police Station, demanding justice.

With them, hundreds of locals gathered at the police station, calling the incident not just an accident but a death caused by criminal negligence and a lack of humanity.

The family alleged that Khan was forced to lift heavy loads beyond his capacity by the shop's owner and his son, which triggered the heart attack.

Speaking to NDTV, a relative of the victim said, "He was crying in pain, asking for help. But instead of taking him to the hospital, they told others to continue working. We want justice for Rafiq. The owner didn't even get up from his chair."

The police have started an investigation.

Qualcomm Chief To NDTV On Company's Plans In India, AI And 6G

The Indian telecom story is one which has seen amazing opportunities in the last few years. From 2G to 3G, 4G and 5G, what does the future hold? Behind all the technology is another story of hard work, design and manufacturing - and that's where the tech company Qualcomm comes into the Indian picture.

Qualcomm President Cristiano R Amon in an interview with NDTV's Vishnu Som said 6G is the connectivity for the age of AI (artificial intelligence).

"We started with 2G... 3G was about connecting to the Internet, 4G was about broadband and making the phone into a computer, 5G was about making sure that everyone could have unlimited data rates... 6G is the connectivity for the age of AI," Amon said.

What 6G is going to do, he said, besides providing faster and cheaper communication, is to deploy "sensing networks" which is going to be incredibly important for the age of AI.

"We are now in the era of networks that understand the context of communications and a lot of data is going to be important for AI. That leads into this whole conversation about how AI is evolving and I think communications is going to evolve as well and that's what 6G is all about," the Qualcomm chief said.

To a question about how AI services that people commonly use today will evolve in the next five years, he said it's definitely going to be faster five years from now.

"I think some of the revolutions are about to start right now. When you think about the history of computers, I can probably bet the computer that you use the most is your smartphone and is your inseparable device. What's happening is AI gets developed in a data centre and gets into commercial applications... That's going to be in your phone, on your PC, in your car, in your future smart device," Amon said.

"We're starting to see how AI is fundamentally changing those computers because one of the many capabilities of AI is to understand us. We don't have to learn how to use the computer anymore. The AI understands what we say, understands what we write, understands what we see. I think we're starting to see the beginning of what we call agentic experience, agents that are going to be the new apps. We're going to see that happen in all the devices," he said.

On India

Amon said it is all about "100 per cent empowerment", referring to India's technological base that common people use, such as UPI.

"It's well understood, if you empower people with connectivity, with computing, with access to knowledge via the internet, you create economic activity. You create opportunity. I think we have seen that. We have seen the transformation, I would dare to say, in the transformation of India to where India is today and where India is going, in the connectivity and smartphones and the mobile Internet. It was one important component among many others," Amon told NDTV.

"I think the same needs to be applied when we think about AI. We should be working very hard to democratise this technology and make sure that everyone has access to it..."

The Qualcomm chief said he was "very privileged to have a great conversation" with Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

"I'm always inspired by the Prime Minister. It's my third meeting I had with him. But what is interesting about this meeting in particular is the vision for India in the India AI Mission and the India Semiconductor Mission. There is a great intersection with Qualcomm. Look, we have been in India for two decades. There's so many things we have been doing in India. We're very proud of our partnerships here in all of the sectors from automotive to PC to smartphone," he said.

An employee working for a European firm has gone viral on social media for sharing a post about the work culture difference between India and Europe. In a now-viral Reddit post titled, "Work Culture Shock: India vs Europe", the user posted a screenshot of a Teams conversation where the European colleagues nonchalantly explained their plans of being absent from work.

One of the workers said they were going to take a leave on Monday, followed by work from home (WFH),/personal time for the rest of the week.

"Good morning! Heads up on my schedule next week. I am off Monday, then WFH/personal time the rest of the week. I have my 3 kids, as my wife is out of town. I'll keep the team posted if I cannot attend individual meetings," wrote the employee, while another simply informed: "Sorry team, I cannot make today."

The Indian employee who posted the screenshot asked: "Can we Indians post like this in Teams?"

'Culture difference'

As the post gained significant traction online, a section of social media users marvelled at the simplicity of communication in Europe, whilst others pointed out how such an arrangement would not work in India.

"It's not just a work culture difference, it's the actual culture difference. Indians are spoon-fed and fear-driven from the beginning, not interest-driven," said one user while another added: "I work for a UK-based company, have a British manager and this is exactly how we work. Don't even have to give a reason for taking the leaves."

A third commented: "See the reason why the toxic culture is so prevalent in India because a lot of Indians are enablers. It's the harshest truth. Many people are simply people pleasers and they think going the extra mile, working with fever and idk what not will gain them a positive image."

A fourth said: "Europeans can say that because their labour laws genuinely protect employees. The less said about Indian laws, the better."

Afghan Minister Sparks Outrage With 'Ban' On Women Journalists At Press Meet

A press conference by Afghanistan's Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttaqi in New Delhi has caused outrage because no women were allowed to attend the event. 

Muttaqi is a part of the Taliban government in Afghanistan and the group is known for the restrictions it imposes on women, essentially barring them from working. The Taliban's human rights record and the possibility of terror groups getting a safe haven in Afghanistan have been some of the factors which have made India cautious in its engagement with the group. 

Muttaqi, who arrived in India on Thursday, held talks with Jaishankar on Friday. The meeting, seen as a big reset of ties, saw India announcing that the technical mission in Kabul would be upgraded to an embassy, which was welcomed by the Afghanistan foreign minister.

"India is fully committed to the sovereignty, territorial integrity, and independence of Afghanistan. I am pleased to announce the upgrading of India's Technical Mission to the status of embassy," Jaishankar said. 

A press conference by Muttaqi in the afternoon at Afghanistan's embassy, however, saw women being stopped from attending. NDTV raised the issue with security personnel at the embassy, but they did not relent. 

Several journalists then took to social media to express their anger and also pointed out that all women reporters had respected the dress code. Many social media users also questioned the action. 

Terror Remark

The Afghanistan foreign minister said during the press conference that his country does not give any space to terror groups like the Lashkar-e-Taiba and Jaish-e-Mohammed, which have carried out several attacks against India, and urged Pakistan to do the same. 

"Not a single one of them is in Afghanistan. Not an inch of land is controlled by them in the country... Let other countries also act against such terror groups like Afghanistan did for peace," he said, in an unmistakable reference to Pakistan.

Blaming Pakistan for a recent attack in the country, Muttaqi said no one should have a problem with peace in the country. 

"Afghanistan looks at India as a close friend. Afghanistan wants relations based on mutual respect, trade, and people-to-people relations," said the minister.

"Attackers Said They Were Didi's Men": BJP MP On Assault By Mob In Bengal

Khagen Murmu, the BJP MP attacked allegedly by Trinamool Congress goons, has vehemently refuted Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee's assertion that the locals at the flood-hit Jalpaiguri area where he had gone two days ago to distribute aid, had attacked him. Murmu and BJP MLA Shankar Ghosh were set upon by a group of men, who, he said, were brought from other places, including Delhi, to block the entry of the BJP leaders. 

Videos of the attack on the two leaders and images of a profusely bleeding Murmu have been widely circulated on social media. Describing the attack as a "law and order situation," Mamata Banerjee had said, "I don't want to politicise it. But if you take 30-40 cars inside a village that has lost everything, what can you expect?"

Lying on his hospital bed, Murmu questioned how big a convoy can four MPs and a similar number of MLAs take. "How many cars were there? There was one MP or one MLA in each car, along with a few people from our district. So how many cars could have been there? They saw a 40-car convoy. They did not see that so much blood was shed," he told NDTV's Padmaja Joshi in an exclusive interview.

Describing how the attack took place, he said the crowd had accosted them where they had gone. 

"They were saying, 'We are from the TMC, we are Didi's men. We are here. Why have you come? The BJP has no business here," he said. Unnerved by the mob, most of the leaders got away, but there was no space for Murmu and Ghosh in the boat. 

"They attacked us...  They pushed us and beat us, threw stones at our car, breaking the front and the back windshields," he said, pointing out that the attack has been well-documented. 

The injuries he sustained would take time to heal, he said. "Doctors said another couple of months," he said. "A stone hurled inside my car hit me on the cheekbone, breaking it. I could even lose my eye, doctors said," he added. 

The attack has become a huge flashpoint between Bengal's ruling party and the BJP. Even though two men have been arrested, the row continues.

Today, Bengal Governor CV Ananda Bose gave the Chief Minister a 24-hour 'ultimatum'. Banerjee must restore law and order immediately or face possible constitutional action, he told NDTV.

In a shocking case, an 82-year-old Chinese woman swallowed eight small live frogs believing it would alleviate her lower back pain caused by a herniated disc as she relied on a folklore remedy, the South China Morning Post (SCMP) reported.

Unfortunately, this unconventional method led to severe abdominal pain, and the woman, surnamed Zhang, ended up hospitalised in Hangzhou, Zhejiang province.

"My mother ate eight live frogs. Now the sharp pain has made her unable to walk," her son told the doctor as quoted in the report.

Meanwhile, her digestive system collapsed after swallowing live frogs, with parasites like sparganum infecting her body. She experienced intense pain, making it hard to walk.

She was admitted to a hospital in Hangzhou, and doctors conducted a physical examination on her. The medical experts found a dramatic increase in oxyphil cells, which indicates many illnesses, such as parasitic infections and blood disorders.

Doctors also conducted a few detailed tests. "Swallowing frogs has damaged the patient's digestive system and resulted in some parasites being present in her body, including sparganum," a doctor from the hospital informed the media.

After two weeks of treatment, she was discharged from the hospital.
