Walmart Pays Most Of $1 Billion Tax Bill For Shifting PhonePe To India

US retail giant Walmart has paid the taxes arising from the shifting of the headquarters of PhonePe to India.

Digital payments company PhonePe, in which Walmart has a majority stake following the takeover of parent outfit Flipkart, had shifted its headquarters from Singapore to India.

According to reports, the bill stems from the relocation and increase in the value of PhonePe. Some reports also suggested that Walmart Inc and other PhonePe shareholders faced nearly USD 1 billion as capital gains tax after the digital payments company shifted its headquarters to India.

In response to an email query from PTI, Walmart said: "We can confirm the tax has been paid". The company, however, did not divulge details.

In October last year, FinTech platform PhonePe announced that it had moved its domicile from Singapore to India.

As part of that, all PhonePe Group businesses and entities were transferred and consolidated under PhonePe Pvt Ltd - India.

US-based Bentonville in 2018 completed the acquisition of a 77 per cent stake in Flipkart and become the majority owner of the Indian e-commerce company.

PhonePe was founded in December 2015 and has emerged as India's one of the largest payment apps, enabling digital inclusion for consumers and merchants alike. With 400 million registered users, one in four Indians is now on PhonePe.

The traffic police often try to create awareness about rules and regulations through creative memes and social media posts. This time, a video has been shared by the police to prevent people from parking their vehicles on main roads.

Shared by Kala Krishnaswamy, DCP traffic (east division), Bengaluru, on Twitter, the video opens with a group of people standing on the roadside as three bikes are parked near them. Moments later, the locals begin to panic and rush inside as an elephant charges towards them and aggressively rams into one of the parked bikes, knocking it down.

“Don't park on the main road,” the IPS officer wrote.

At the time of writing this, the video collected close to 3.5 lakh views on the platform and drew various reactions.

“This is so hilarious. Nice to see police communicating through fun humour,” a user wrote.

One sarcastically said, “Give the elephant a police job. He is good at his work”.

Another suggested the elephant was on a traffic rules enforcement drive.

One joked, “Plot twist: the elephant is an undercover traffic cop”.

“Even the elephant knows the rules..super,” a comment read.

“This jumbo is desperately needed in Bengaluru,” a person wrote.

Some highlighted how the elephant knocked down the bike with ease.

“Threw a 150 kg bike as if it's some beach ball,” a user wrote.

“So you can hire a few elephants to overcome the traffic woes!” a person wrote.

According to a report in Mathrubhumi, the incident took place in Kerala's Malappuram in October last year. After the incident, the elephant was guided away from the area and into the forest region by locals and forest officials.

In November 2022, an elephant was caught on camera chasing off people at the Rongjuli area in Assam's Goalpara district. Locals said that a herd of tuskers came out from a nearby jungle and took shelter in the area in search of food.

"No Names Till...": Row Over Rajasthan Anti-Corruption Bureau Order

The names of people caught through decoy operations in corruption cases cannot be made public till they are found guilty in trial, officials of the Anti-Corruption Bureau in Rajasthan have been told in a controversial order. The state's opposition BJP has attacked the Ashok Gehlot government, saying this is evidence that the government is supporting corruption.

The BJP's Rajendra Rathore, deputy leader of the opposition in the Rajasthan assembly, tweeted that the Gehlot government is now becoming the "shield of the corrupt".

The order has been passed by the Anti-Corruption Bureau as soon as its new chief, Hemant Priyadarshi, took charge.

The order says that the names of people trapped in corruption raids can only be revealed after it is proved in court.  The designation and department of the person, however, can be made public.

The BJP's state chief Satish Poonia tweeted:

The state's ruling Congress is yet to respond on the issue.

Actor Satish Shah's Response To Racist Comment At UK Airport Wins Internet

Actor Satish Shah's reaction to a racist comment he received at United Kingdom's Heathrow Airport is going viral on social media. Taking to Twitter, the 'Sarabhai vs Sarabhai' actor revealed that he was at the airport, headed to board his flight when he overheard the staff at the Heathrow Airport questioning how they (presumably Mr Shah and his family) can afford a first-class plane ticket. To this, Mr Shah said that he calmly responded.

"I replied with a proud smile 'because we are Indians' after I overheard the Heathrow staff wonderingly asking his mate 'how can they afford 1st class?'" Mr Shah revealed.

Take a look below:

Mr Shah's tweet has garnered more than 11,000 likes and several comments. Heathrow Airport also responded to the tweet apologising about the encounter. "Good morning, we're sorry to hear about this encounter. May you DM us?" the airport wrote in the comments.

Several internet users also praised Mr Shah for standing up to the racist remark. Some even urged the UK government to take necessary measures.

"We needed Ms Sarabhai to be there. She'd have given a savage reply. This was still okay, like typical Mr Sarabhai. Missing those series," wrote one user. "Next time please add one more line that whatever they are affording today is also because of Indian money, their ancestors looted," said another.

A third user commented, "@HeathrowAirport Please teach your staff how to behave and move beyond this silly & backward mindset of sidelining per Race. The world is very progressive now.. As our respected senior movie industry actor tweeted below, We can afford. We don't do this to your citizens, do we?" A fourth added, "Irony, isn't it. The looters ask original rich people how they afford richness."

Japan Is Paying Families 1 Million Yen Per Child To Move Out Of Tokyo

Japan is going to pay families 1 million Yen per child to move out of Tokyo this year to combat the rapid depopulation in the country's rural areas, according to reports. Under this new proposal, a household with two children could receive 3 million Yen in support if they leave the Tokyo area.

The government hopes that 10,000 people will have moved from Tokyo to rural areas by 2027 under this scheme which began in 2019. Last year, the government supported 1,184 families, while 290 in 2020 and 71 in 2019.

The support for children comes on top of a flat 1 million Yen that families can already get for moving, Time magazine reported. Those eligible to apply for the support funds are households who have lived in the central Tokyo metropolitan area for five years.

The central government and local municipalities are splitting the cost of the funds. Additional support would also be provided if the families want to start a business in the local area.

However, claiming the 1 million Yen to move to an idyllic rural town isn't as easy as it sounds. Families hoping to avail of the support must live in their new homes for at least five years and one member of the household must be in work or plan to open a new business. Those who move out before five years have passed will have to return the cash.

In an attempt to draw crowds, the benefits of Japan's towns and villages are being constantly highlighted. Among them is the availability of "eligibile men", as in the case of Otari village, and easy access to childcare.

With more young people moving away for opportunities in cities, Japan's rural areas have seen rapid depopulation in recent years. Officials hope that the enticing amount will encourage families to revitalise these regions and ease pressure on space and public services in greater Tokyo, The Guardian reported.

This is the latest attempt to reinvigorate the regions amid yet another drop in Japan's population, and birthrate. In 2021, the number of births totalled 811,604, the lowest since records were first kept in 1899.
