Engineer In US In Dilemma After Getting Job Offer In India With "Decent Pay"

The dream of moving abroad for a better life has fuelled the ambitions of countless Indians, but is the grass really greener on the other side? An Indian engineer, who chased that dream all the way to the US, is now seeking Reddit's advice on whether he should move back to India. The anonymous user revealed that he currently lives in the US with his wife and two young children, "one of whom is in Kindergarten". He said has spent most of his professional life in the US, but he was recently offered a job in India with decent pay.

"Hi, I am in my mid 30s working in IT industry. I worked mostly in the US. I have 2 kids, 1 of which is in Kindergarten and other one is a toddler. I just got a job offer in India with a decent pay and in my native state. I am working for an Automotive company through an Indian consultancy," the Redditor wrote.

Should I move back to India from US? Is this right time to do it?

The user shared that his current salary just meets household expenses, however, he added that he values the work-life balance and family time that he is able to get in the US. "I may not get it in India where the work demands more additional work time," he wrote. "I am unable to choose. What would you do if you are in my situation?" he asked the Reddit community.

The post has gone viral, triggering a discussion online. "It's a hard choice, and honestly, no one can really help you decide. You just have to commit to one option, not look back, and accept that you can't have the best of both worlds," commented one user.

"Move back before the kids grow up. Getting adjusted will be difficult as they get older," said another.

"If you can't increase your salary in the U.S. and can live comfortably in India with additional savings, then it makes sense to move back. Your expenses will only rise once both kids start school," said a third user.

"If you don't foresee making more $ here and your wife cannot help out financially, It's probably best to move back. It only going to get worse here and the bigger issues are actually going to be visa related. If you were to lose your job, you won't have a backup and will end up emptying all your savings. Your kids are young, they will get used to India. Once they're older, it will be really hard for them to move to India," commented one user.

Gill's Captaincy Receives Brutal Review After IPL Exit: "You Can't Drop..."

After Gujarat Titans' (GT) bowed out of IPL 2025 with a 20-run defeat to Mumbai Indians (MI) in the Eliminator, former India batter Robin Uthappa said the Shubman Gill-led side cannot expect to win the championship if they suffer catching lapses and suffer due to flaws in strategy. In New Chandigarh on Friday evening, GT dropped three important catches – two of which were of Rohit Sharma, who went on to make a dashing 50-ball 81. Suryakumar Yadav was also given a reprieve in the 12th over, as MI made 228/5. GT also got their middle overs enforcer Prasidh Krishna to bowl with the new ball, a tactic which backfired as Rohit and Jonny Bairstow came out all guns blazing in the powerplay. "GT's strategy was more reactive than proactive. Using Prasidh in the powerplay – despite his success in middle overs – was a misstep.”

“His first over was expensive, and they failed to course-correct. The 26-run and 22-run overs proved costly. On top of that, their fielding let them down. You can't drop that many catches and expect to win a championship," said Uthappa on JioHotstar.

Uthappa, who previously won IPL with Kolkata Knight Riders and Chennai Super Kings, reflected on how Rohit made a calculated shift in his batting approach after being given two reprieves.

"After the early drop, Rohit flirted with danger briefly but quickly recognised the need to take control. He shifted gears, played responsibly, found the gaps, and built key partnerships. His composure stood out. When players like Rohit, Dhoni, or Kohli are at the crease, the pressure is on everyone else. Sai Sudharsan is starting to reach that level too."

With MI set to meet Punjab Kings in Qualifier 2 at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Sunday, Uthappa stated he expects a fierce battle between the two teams. The winner of Qualifier 2 will meet Royal Challengers Bengaluru in the title clash in Ahmedabad on June 3.

"Punjab are hurting and will come out firing. Mumbai, riding high on momentum, will bring intensity as well. It's set to be a blockbuster, one for the ages," he concluded.

How Trump Administration Targeting Chinese Students Was Years In The Making

The United States' plans to “aggressively” revoke visas for Chinese students did not happen in a day. US President Donald Trump and his allies had been laying the groundwork for this since years.

In 2023, in a campaign trail, Trump vowed to ban “Christian-hating communists, Marxists and socialists” from the country, shut down China-funded Confucius Institutes on U.S. college campuses and even prosecute Chinese scientific researchers and professors working at US universities.

“The president laid it out there in the campaign… when he says he's going to do something in the campaign, he actually tries to do it,” said Ken Cuccinelli, who was Trump's deputy of Homeland Security during his first term, per a report by the Politico.

“The reason people like me raised it in the first term is the reason you're hearing from Rubio — there are very real security reasons to not help the Chinese advance their position in technical fields, and certainly not anyone more closely associated with [the Chinese Communist Party].”

The administration has China hawks who have been focussed on cracking down China's influence on US institutions.

About 277,000 Chinese students studied in the US last year, and Marco Rubio, Secretary of State has vowed to “aggressively revoke” the visas and said that they will focus on people with connections to the Chinese Communist Party or those studying sensitive subjects.

“The Secretary made this decision in the administration's ongoing effort to protect our homeland from espionage and other hostile actions,” White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said in a statement.

China has condemned the policy and termed it “unreasonable”, one that “damaged the legitimate rights and interests of Chinese students and disrupted the normal cultural exchanges between the two countries.” The policy further complicated ties between the countries which are already battling strained ties since Trump put a 145 per cent tariff on Chinese goods but ultimately reduced it to 30 per cent after a temporary agreement with China. Similarly China also reduced the tariffs on the US from 125 percent to 10 per cent.

This week the US curbed critical US technology sales to China, including software that is used to make semiconductors.

The visa revocations for Chinese students comes as the initial step in removing Chinese influence from the United States. Trump allies hope the next target will be funding for universities working with Chinese grad students.

Moreover, US immigration law bars members of the Communist Party from becoming naturalised citizens or green card holders, however, these rules do not apply to people in the United States on student or tourist visas.

“Those who come to enjoy our country must love our country,” Trump said. “We're going to keep foreign, Christian-hating communists, Marxists and socialists out of America.”

Legislation to limit Chinese nationals from obtaining visas for STEM-related studies had been introduced as early as 2020 by Sen. Tom Cotton (R-Ark.) He applauded the administration's decision in a statement, saying “China's use of students to spy on political dissidents and American researchers is a well-documented national security threat.”

Rubio too had introduced a bill in 2021 targeting Chinese nationals in 2021. He pressured local colleges to shut down their Confucius Institutes when he represented Florida in the US Senate. He said in 2022, vocally opposing China, saying that it “is the most formidable near-peer adversary our nation has ever faced.”

87,812 Indians Got Canadian Citizenship In 2024, Most From Any Nation

Canada's Citizenship Week, which kicked off on May 26 and runs until June 1, is a vibrant celebration of the country's rich diversity and the shared values that define Canadian citizenship.

At the heart of this celebration is the recognition of the incredible contributions immigrants make to Canada's growth and prosperity. According to Immigration Minister Lena Metlege Diab, "Each year, Citizenship Week offers our country an occasion to reflect on the meaning of citizenship." She beautifully encapsulates Canada's identity as "a mosaic that includes Canadians of all backgrounds and cultures," emphasising the importance of Indigenous Peoples' histories and the commitment to reconciliation.

The statistics underscore the significant role immigration plays in shaping Canada's identity. In 2024, a substantial 3.74 lakh individuals were granted Canadian citizenship, with Indian nationals making up 23% of this number, totaling 87,812 individuals, per a report in the Times of India. This represents a notable increase from 2023, when 78,714 Indians gained citizenship. Minister Diab praises the courage of those seeking better opportunities and security for their families, saying, "It takes incredible courage to face the challenges and uncertainty of a new place."

As Canadians celebrate this diversity, the government has outlined its immigration plan for the next few years. The targets indicate a slight decrease in permanent resident admissions, with 3.95 lakh planned for 2025, 3.80 lakh for 2026, and 3.65 lakh for 2027.

Despite this reduction, the government aims to prioritise those already in Canada, with over 40% of permanent resident admissions in 2025 expected to be from temporary residents. Minister Diab encourages Canadians to attend public citizenship ceremonies, highlighting the importance of recognising the value immigration brings to Canada. "As Canadians, it is our responsibility to continue to highlight the value that immigration brings to Canada, and to protect the inherent rights and dignity of those who seek to call it home," she emphasises.

The Citizenship Week celebrations serve as a poignant reminder of Canada's commitment to its diverse population and the values that define its citizenship. As Minister Diab so eloquently puts it, "We also take this moment to recognise that our diversity is our strength and to collectively recommit to building a better future for all who live here."

Harvard Has Got To Behave, Have A 15% Cap On Foreign Students: Trump

President Donald Trump said on Wednesday that Harvard University should have a 15% cap on the number of foreign students it admits and that the Ivy League school needs to show the administration their current list of students from other countries.

"Harvard has got to behave themselves. Harvard is treating our country with great disrespect and all they're doing is getting in deeper and deeper" Trump told reporters gathered in the Oval Office.

Why Donald Trump Cannot Build The Golden Dome Without Canada

United States President Donald Trump on Tuesday unveiled new details on his plan for a missile defence system known as "Golden Dome", which is estimated to cost a total of some $175 billion. The "Golden Dome" will be the first weapon the US puts in space, and it should be operational in about three years, by the end of his time in office, the President said.

The System is meant to protect the United States from all kinds of missile or drone attacks, but Trump said that Canada has expressed interest in being part of it as "they want to have protection also."

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said Wednesday his government is talking to the US about joining President Donald Trump's future Golden Dome missile defense program.

"Is it a good idea for Canada? Yes, it is a good to have protections in place for Canadians," Mr Carney said. He also added, "We cooperate if necessary but not necessarily cooperate," Mr Carney said.

However, he missed out one important detail, that is, he cannot build it without Canada. The latter would need to play an important role in the working of the $500 billion Golden Dome. They would need to provide radars and airspace needed to track the incoming missiles in the Arctic.

“There's a lot we just don't know. There's a lot that needs to be revealed about how the economic and security partnership with America and Canada will unfold,” said Shuvaloy Majumdar, a Conservative member of Canada's parliament.

Trump has entangled the US and Canada in tariff wars, which have caused strained ties between the two countries. Hence, Canada now has some leverage when it comes to the US.

“None of [the Golden Dome partnership] has been spelled out or negotiated,” Jack Reed of Rhode Island, the top Democrat on the Senate Armed Services Committee, said in an interview. “The president, because of his rhetoric, has alienated a large part of the Canadian population, and that's being reflected in the political leaders … it's not, you know, good old Canada-USA. It's like, ‘We can't do this easily, because our people are very upset.'”

Canada has a large airspace that offers the US an important line of sight for the US sensors to shoot down missiles from China and Russia. Moreover, historically, Canada has played a big role in air and missile defence for North America.

“What Canada really brings is terrain,” said Glen VanHerck, a retired Air Force general who led the U.S. Northern Command until last year. “If we can position, or Canada positions, over-the-horizon radars further north in the Arctic, that dramatically increases the United States and Canada's ability to see over the pole into Russia, into China and other places.”

The North American Aerospace Defense Command, or NORAD, has ensured since 67 years that American and Canadian militaries work together daily to track anything that comes close to the airspace. The radars of both the countries share information.

Canada has funded 40 percent of NORAD investments, and is adding $38 billion over the next two decades. Without the help of Canada, the US will have difficulties building an important North American air defence.

Carney and his ministers “are having wide-ranging and constructive discussions with their American counterparts,” Audrey Champoux, a spokesperson from the prime minister's office, said in a statement.

The U.S Northern Command, which oversees NORAD, said it “will continue to prioritise our core mission of defending the United States and Canada and will ensure any new capabilities align with that objective.”

Kohli Achieves Historic Highs, Becomes 1st Ever Batter In IPL History To...

Virat Kohli has made history for Royal Challengers Bengaluru in the IPL 2025. Playing against Lucknow Super Giants, Virat Kohli reached 9000 runs for RCB when he reached the score of 24. The former Indian cricket team captain is the first player to do so. He also slammed a half-century in 27 balls. Kohli achieved another big feat. Kohi is now the first batter to cross 600 five times in IPL. Virat is RCB's highest-ever run-getter in history, combining statistics from IPL and now-defunct Champions League T20. Kohli ultimately fell on 54.

Most runs for a team in Men's T20s
9004 - Virat Kohli for RCB
6060 - Rohit Sharma for MI
5934 - James Vince for Hampshire
5528 - Suresh Raina for CSK
5314 - MS Dhoni for CSK

600-plus aggregate in an IPL edition most often
5 - Virat Kohli (2013, 2016, 2023, 2024, 2025)
4 - KL Rahul (2018, 2020, 2021, 2022)
3 - Chris Gayle (2011, 2012, 2013)
3 - David Warner (2016, 2017, 2019)

Before Tuesday's match, in 279 matches and 270 innings, he has scored 8,970 runs at an average of 39.54 and a strike rate of 133.49. He has scored eight centuries and 64 fifties. His best score is 113*.

He is the highest run-getter in IPL history, with 8,552 runs in 264 matches and 256 innings at an average of 39.59, with eight centuries and 62 fifties. His best score is 113*.

In 15 matches for RCB in CLT20, he has made 424 runs at an average of 38.54 and a strike rate of 150.35, with two half-centuries. His best score is 84*. He is the franchise's top run-getter in the competition.

Virat has been sensational this season, top-scoring for the franchise with 548 runs in 12 innings at an average of 60.88 and a strike rate of 145.35. He has scored seven fifties, with the best score of 73*. He is the sixth-highest run-getter in the tournament currently.

Rishabh Pant produced his best batting of the season in the last league match, scoring a scintillating unbeaten century to propel Lucknow Super Giants to 226/3 in 20 overs in Match 70 of Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 at the Ekana Stadium here on Tuesday. Pant, who has struggled throughout the season, moving up and down the order but managing only one half-century, found his mojo in the last match and put up a brilliant display of power-hitting as he hammered his second century in IPL history to help LSG set the biggest chase ever at the Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Cricket Stadium in Lucknow. The previous highest chase here is 206 and RCB will not have to set a new record for the venue if they have to win this match.

Pant remained unbeaten on 118 off 61 balls while Mitchell Marsh continued with his superb form for the season with 67 off 37 balls as LSG reached a massive total.

RCB, who need to win this match to finish among the top two and secure a place in Qualifier 1, faltered with their team selection, leaving out skipper Rajat Patidar on the bench.

Asked to bat first, Lucknow Super Giants were off to a poor start as debutant Matthew Breetzke (14 off 12, 1x4, 1x6), who was struck on his head by Nuwan Thushara, departed with 25 runs on the board, Thushara castling him with a beauty. However, skipper Rishabh Pant showed a welcome return to form in their last match of the season as he joined Mitchell Marsh in raising 142 runs for the second wicket, propelling the side towards a huge total.

Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), needing to win the match to finish among the top two, looked a bit off-colour on the field as their bowlers proved a bit ineffective against Pant and Marsh.

Pant looked in his element as he started with a 2,6,2,4,0,4 blitz against Yash Dayal in the fourth over and went from strength to strength from there as LSG reached 55/1 in the power-play.

Pant continued to flourish with a six and four off successive balls against Bhuvneshwar Kumar in the fifth over, a six followed by two fours in the 10th off Suyash Sharma, and a four and six off successive balls against the same bowler in the 10th as he raced to his half-century in 29 balls.

Marsh, who has been the top scorer for LSG this season, was equally good at the other end as he raced past the 600-run mark for the season, scoring his half-century in 31 balls as they reached the 150-run mark in their partnership in 85 balls.

Desperate to stem the run flow, RCB skipper Jitesh Sharma brought Bhuvneshwar Kumar into the attack but Marsh treated his return with sixes off successive balls -- the first over the bowler's head, while the second was a loft off a fullish delivery bowled wide, went high into the sky but landed way beyond the long-off boundary. However, the bowler had the last laugh as he induced an outside edge on a scrambled seam delivery that landed full on sixth stump. Marsh attempted a loft again but edged it behind. He was out for 67 off 37 balls studded with four fours and five sixes.

Pant continued to thrive and reached his second century in the Indian Premier League (IPL) in seven years as he blasted boundaries at will, reaching the three-figure mark off 54 balls.

Pant showcased his best in the final match of the season, He didn't have any pressure as his team was out of the race and was playing for pride. Pant batted freely and was also helped by some innocuous bowling by the RCB bowling unit.

Pant hammered 11 boundaries and eight maximums for an unbeaten 118 off 61 balls, batting in the third and fourth gear throughout the match. Nicholas Pooran scored 13 off 10 balls and was out in the final over as LSG set up the biggest chase for RCB.

NDTV Explains: India vs China In Race For Arctic Oil, Gas, Shipping Routes

Welcome to the Arctic Circle.

The race to 'conquer' the world's final frontier is gathering steam and India is gently but firmly positioning itself in that contest, one which China has also entered and which has been given added urgency by Russian military actions in 2014 (the Crimean War) and 2022 (invasion of Ukraine).

The 'rewards' are staggering though - from oil and minerals to drinking water, from access to faster shipping routes to a possibly decisive upper hand in the global geopolitical and military arena.

A remote and largely inhospitable region of the world, the Arctic has emerged as the next global geopolitical and geostrategic hotspot, possibly even the next battlefield, thanks to climate change and the warming of polar ice caps. But its strategic importance has never really been in doubt.

It has, for the most part, been a question of access, specifically terrain so bleak it made extracting oil and other natural resources, navigating the waters, or maintaining military bases near-impossible.

Where is the Arctic?

What we identify as the Arctic is the northernmost region of our planet. The common definition is that area within the Arctic Circle, a line of latitude about 66.5 degrees north of the Equator.

Within this area are the Arctic Ocean and the polar ice caps, and over four million people from eight countries - the United States, Canada, Denmark, Iceland, Norway, Sweden, Finland, and Russia.

Eight nations with territories inside the Arctic Circle form the Council.

There are also an estimated 500,000 people from indigenous tribal communities.

Together, these countries and communities inside the Arctic make up the Arctic Council and "carry the role as stewards of the region", and whom India has been 'engaging' for several years.

In 2013 India was made an 'observer nation' of the Council.

What is in the Arctic?

Compressed into approximately 14.5 million square kilometres, the Arctic holds 13 per cent of the world's undiscovered oil and 30 per cent of all undiscovered natural gas stores.

That amounts to 90 billion barrels of oil, 1,670 trillion cubic feet of natural gas, and 44 billion barrels of natural gas liquids, which are hydrocarbons extracted from natural gas or crude oil.re

Dark blue regions have at least one undiscovered oil and/or gas field.

It also contains vast reserves of coal, iron, copper, zinc, nickel, bauxite, diamonds, and sulphides, and also millions of tons of phosphate used to make fertilisers.

The Arctic also holds an estimated 20 of the world's freshwater reserves, which is a commodity that could well become more valuable than any other in the not-too-distant future.

There is gold too; the Fort Knox Gold Mine in Alaska is one of the largest in the world.

And Arctic shipping routes could allow maritime trade to cut down on 8,000 km as they ferry the estimated billions of tons of cargo shipped annually between the Europe and Asia.

Why is the Arctic important now

Because it is melting, at a rate nearly four times faster than anywhere else in the world

Ice levels in September 2017, for example, was 25 per cent smaller than end-of-summer averages from 1981 to 2010, and has been melting at an unprecedented rate - over 12 per cent per decade.

Global warming means the Arctic's ice caps and the vast stretches of frozen ice that otherwise make it impossible for most ships to pass - certainly not without an ice-breaker plowing a path.

Melting polar ice caps are an existential crisis for humanity; rising sea levels will flood coastal cities and low-lying areas, including Bangkok, Amsterdam, Ho Chi Minh City, and even parts of London.

But they open the door to begin extracting those billions of barrels of oil, a treasure trove countries doing the extraction, for example, could use to reduce dependence on West Asian suppliers.

It also opens the door to millions of tons of coal and precious metals under the ice.

An icebreaker is a special-purpose ship or boat that navigates through ice-covered waters (File).

Overall, the melting of the ice caps has woken the world to the natural resources and strategic importance of the Arctic, both of which interest countries beyond the Council, including India.

In fact, in May 2025, the Observer Research Foundation and the Arctic Circle, a 60-nation "network of international dialogue and cooperation" met in Delhi to discuss Asia's involvement in Arctic affairs.

India v China for the Arctic

Back in 2018, China's first Arctic Policy spoke of a "mutually beneficial polar partnership", which would have included linking its Belt Road Initiative to the Northern Sea Route to create the 'Polar Silk Route'.

The resulting passageway, Beijing said, would shorten maritime travel time to Europe by 40 per cent.

The longer route, in use now, sees Chinese ships sail down south, through the Malacca Strait (between the Malay Peninsula and Indonesia, a chokepoint that allows the Indian Navy to monitor maritime traffic off its coastline), across the Indian Ocean, and then back up through the Suez Canal.

Since then, i.e., since articulating its Arctic Policy, China has been called itself as a 'near-Arctic state', and has sought a seat at the Arctic Council, something that is not likely to be granted.

However, Beijing too was given 'observer nation' status.

For China the Arctic quest is more about trade, really, than anything else.

As one of the world's largest manufacturers (of pretty much everything), it needs fast and reliable distribution routes, and ships are generally cost-effective compared to planes.

And the Malacca chokepoint isn't ideal, particularly if there should be military conflict with India.

Faster maritime trade is a big attraction for India too.

India's involvement with the Arctic dates back to 1920, when the Svalbard Treaty was signed in Paris. And today it is one of a handful of nations to have a permanent base in the Arctic.

Set up in 2008 and called 'Himadri', it is in the Norwegian territory of Svalbard, roughly 1,200km from the North Pole, and has provided field and laboratory support to scientists back home.

Unlike China, India is seen as slow-playing its Arctic card, choosing to cooperate with the Council and present itself as a 'responsible stakeholder' by engaging with all sides on key issues, including, for example, research into microbial organisms and hydropower generation.

India has good ties with Norway, for example, with which it has studied climate change, and also has a friendly relationship with both Russia and the United States.

All this, though, could change, particularly as China steps up designs on the Arctic, which includes the tried-and-tested method of pumping billions into ' infrastructure projects.

Beijing has reportedly bought real estate in Iceland, invested money in Greenland airports and bought into Russian projects, though they have been rebuffed by Norway, Sweden, and Finland.

Nevertheless, this has alarmed the West, and this has given India an opportunity, a chance to be the friendly and trustworthy face in the growing list of suitors for the Arctic Circle.

Girl, 15, Raped Repeatedly, Forced Into Prostitution In Maharashtra: Cops

A 15-year-old girl was confined in a house for two months, repeatedly raped, forced to undergo an abortion and was also made to indulge in prostitution by a man known to her family in Dombivali in Maharashtra's Thane district, a police official said on Sunday.

Four persons, including a woman, have been arrested, though the main accused is still at large, the official added.

The girl's ordeal came to light after some workers found out about it, following which Tilak Nagar police raided a house in a rural part of Dombivali and rescued her, the official said.

"The victim's mother sells food and she came in contact with the main accused, who sells spices and was known to her family. When she had a fight with her mother after her Class X exams and walked out of the house, the main accused cajoled her into coming with him," he said.

"He then confined her for two months and sexually assaulted her. When she got pregnant, he took her to another individual for an abortion. She was then kept at a couple's house, where she was forced into prostitution," the official said.

While the family was looking for her, the main accused misled them by saying he had seen the girl in the city but she was angry and would not return, the official said, adding her kin approached police only after two months.

After the survivor narrated her ordeal to police, four persons were arrested, including a woman and her husband. However, the main accused is on the run, the official said.

A case was registered under Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita sections 137(2) (kidnapping), 65(1) (rape in certain cases), 88 (causing miscarriage), 143 (trafficking of person), 144 (exploitation of trafficked person) as well as provisions of Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act and Immoral Traffic (Prevention) Act, Assistant Commissioner of Police (Dombivli) Suhas Hemade told PTI.

Police teams are carrying out further probe into the crime, he added.

Most COVID Cases In India Mild, Under Home Care: Sources

Most of the Covid cases reported in various states are mild in nature and the patients are under home care, official sources said amid a rise in cases in some countries.

The matter regarding COVID-19 cases was reviewed by the Union Health Secretary on Saturday with the Secretary, Department of Health Research (DHR) and Director General of the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), DGHS and National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) etc, they said.

Some COVID-19 cases have been reported mainly from States like Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra, Karnataka, etc. Sources that there is a robust pan India system for surveillance of respiratory illnesses including Covid-19 through the Integrated Disease Surveillance Programme (IDSP) and ICMR's pan India respiratory virus sentinel surveillance network.

"It is observed that most of these cases are mild and under home care," an official source said.

"It may also be mentioned that there have been some media reports regarding increase in COVID-19 cases in Singapore, Hong Kong and other countries in the recent past. It has been ascertained from the respective National IHR focal points that there is no indication that the circulating variants are more transmissible or cause more severe disease compared to the previously circulating variants," the source said The sources asserted that the Union Health Ministry remains vigilant and, through its multiple agencies, is proactively monitoring the situation closely.

Meanwhile, according to the INSACOG data, one case of the newly emerging COVID-19 variant NB.1.8.1 and four cases of LF.7 have been detected in India.

As of May 2025, the World Health Organization (WHO) classifies LF.7 and NB.1.8 subvariants as Variants Under Monitoring (VUMs), not as Variants of Concern (VOCs) or Variants of Interest (VOIs). But these are the variants reportedly driving the rise in COVID cases in China and parts of Asia.

In India, the most common variant remains JN.1, comprising 53 per cent of samples tested, followed by BA.2 (26%) and other Omicron sublineages (20%), according to INSACOG.

As of May 19, the country had 257 active cases. Delhi recorded 23 new cases, Andhra Pradesh reported four in the last 24 hours, Telangana confirmed one, and a nine-month-old in Bengaluru tested positive amid a gradual rise over the past 20 days. Kerala reported 273 cases in May alone.

Officials in several states reported more cases on Saturday, May 24.

In Maharashtra, a COVID-19 patient suffering from severe diabetes died of comorbidities in Thane while eight new cases of the viral infection were reported in the city on Saturday, the Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) said.

Two men were detected with coronavirus in Madhya Pradesh's commercial capital Indore. In Uttarakhand, a 57-year-old tourist from Gujarat in Rishikesh and a woman doctor from AIIMS Rishikesh have been found infected with Covid.

All 23 recent COVID-19 patients in Delhi experienced only mild symptoms and were under home quarantine, said the health officials in the Delhi government.

A 55-year-old woman was placed under home quarantine after she tested positive for COVID-19 in Noida on Delhi's outskirts.

Telangana Health Minister Damodar Rajanarasimh, convened a high-level review meeting to assess the current COVID-19 scenario in the state and the preparedness of the health department.

A COVID-19 case was reported in Hyderabad and the patient, a pulmonologist, has fully recovered, officials said on Friday.

He Posed As Doctor For Years. How A Patient's Death Exposed Him

A young man, armed with stolen documents and a borrowed identity, posed as a doctor for years, even working at a private and a government hospital. His secret would likely have remained buried had a railway officer not bothered to find out about the doctor's past after his mother's death in Madhya Pradesh's Jabalpur.

The incident occurred at Marble City Hospital, where Manoj Kumar, a railway officer, had admitted his ailing mother. As her condition worsened, the doctors allegedly mentioned she needed ventilator support. However, the hospital's records later claimed that the family had refused the ventilator - something Manoj strongly denies.

Sensing discrepancies, Manoj began probing into the identity of the doctor who treated his mother. What he unearthed was nothing short of a medical thriller - the man posing as Dr Brijraj Uike was in fact Satyendra Nishad. He had assumed a false identity to become a doctor.

Satyendra, investigators say, stole the Class 12 marksheet and other documents of his school friend, the real Brijraj Uike, a painter from Katni, and used them to gain MBBS admission under the tribal quota in 2018.

"He and I studied 12th together in Katni," said Brijraj Uike, the man whose identity was stolen. "I was shocked to hear a patient had died, and that my name was being used by someone as a doctor. I had reported my documents missing way back in 2012."

With those forged credentials, Satyendra cleared medical entrance, entered medical college, completed his MBBS, got Medical Council of India (MCI) registration, and even did a super-specialisation. He then worked at a government hospital for two years before joining the private sector - all while masquerading as Brijraj.

Dr Sanjay Mishra, Chief Medical and Health Officer (CMHO) of Jabalpur, said, "Every registered hospital must submit valid doctor credentials. In this case, starting from the Class 12 marksheet, tampering has been found. We verify certificates from the university and MCI. But if those documents are fake from the beginning, the fraud becomes harder to detect. Police action is now essential."

The case was taken up by the Omti police station, which registered a case under IPC sections relating to fraud, forgery, impersonation, and misuse of reservation benefits.

Sonu Kurmi, City Superintendent of Police (CSP), said, "We received a complaint from Manoj Kumar, a railway officer, who was suspicious after his mother's death at Marble City Hospital. When he tried to speak to the doctor, he was not allowed. He then suspected the doctor was fake. Our investigation confirmed that the man treating patients was Satyendra Nishad. He used forged documents of his friend Brijraj to clear NEET and complete MBBS. A case has been registered and a team has been formed to arrest the accused, who is currently absconding."

Sai Sudharsan's 1st Reaction On Maiden India Call-Up: "Don't Think I Am..."

Sai Sudharsan described his maiden Test call-up as "surreal" after being named in India's squad for the upcoming five-match Test series in England, as per ESPNcricinfo. "It obviously feels great. Feels very special to be honest, and surreal also. Any cricketer, any young cricketer who starts playing cricket, wants to play Test cricket, wants to play for the country," he said, as quoted from ESPNcricinfo. "The ultimate goal is always to play Test cricket. So really happy for that," he added.

Following the retirements of stalwarts Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, Sudharsan is expected to be part of India's new-look top four. Though he typically opens the batting for Tamil Nadu in the Ranji Trophy, Sudharsan has expressed his readiness to bat in any position for the national team.

"Sir, I think playing for the country itself is a very big privilege for a cricketer. So I don't think I am in a position to choose where I want to play," Sai Sudharsan said.

"Wherever the coaches tell me to play, I think I will be mentally and obviously skillfully, you know, try and be ready for the opportunity," he added.

"I have a lot of likings. I think I will have to be ready for whichever (position) the team gives me. I will be ready for that," he noted.

Adding to the momentous occasion, his Test debut could come under the leadership of Shubman Gill, his captain at Gujarat Titans (GT), who has just been appointed India's new red-ball skipper.

"I mean, Shubhi (Shubman Gill) is, over the years, I have been a part of his growth as well," Sai Sudharsan said, as quoted from ESPNcricinfo.

"I have seen him for the last four years. Such a talented batsman, such a skillful batsman, anybody can see," he added.

"So I feel he will definitely do laurels and great things for the country and I am grateful and I am very happy to play under him in my first Test series," he noted.

The highly anticipated series begins on June 20, but both Sudharsan and Gill will first join the India A squad for the second four-day match against the England Lions, scheduled to start on June 6 in Northampton.

"I always feel finish the first story, then go to the next one because now the IPL is also most important when we are in IPL (Indian Premier League)," he said, as quoted from ESPNcricinfo.

"So I think it is also most important of finishing this and then obviously we will have time to prepare. So I will use that bracket of days so that we will be ready for the Test series," he added.

For now, however, Sudharsan remains focused on the Indian Premier League, where Gujarat Titans have secured a spot in the knockout stage.

He also acknowledged the unique challenge of transitioning from the high-paced T20 format to the more demanding rhythms of Test cricket.

"Transitioning from white ball to red ball takes a bit of time," he said, as quoted from ESPNcricinfo.

"I think I focus a lot more on my basics. I focus a lot more on my patience even outside the field," he added.

"The more patient you are, the more it reflects inside the field. So, Test cricket is all about patience and longevity. So I feel the more I focus on that, the more I be aware of it, I think it will be a great experience," he noted.

Schumacher Signs Helmet 12 Years After Accident. F1 Great On The Mend?

Michael Schumacher continues to remain an intriguing name in F1, even after remaining away from public eye for over a decade since a horrific skiing accident in December, 2013.  Since then, details about his health condition have been kept confidential. It has been reported in the past that Schumacher has been residing in Switzerland. Last year, former world champion Sebastian Vettel, who is close to Schumacher and his family, recently revealed that the F1 legend "is not doing well".

However, now a great news has emerged. According to a report in European media, Michael Schumacher signed a crash helmet last month with the help of his wife Corinna Schumacher. That helmet is to be auctioned for charity. The F1 great those world champions to contribute his signature for the noble cause. In all, 20 world champions have signed on the helmet.

Johnny Herbert, Schumacher's teammate at Benetton in 1994 and 1995, said the act was an 'emotional' moment.

"It's wonderful news that Michael Schumacher signed Jackie Stewart's helmet," Herbert told FastSlots.

'It was a wonderful moment. We haven't seen something emotional like this in years, and hopefully, it's a sign. Hopefully, Michael is on the mend. It's been a long, horrible journey for the family, and maybe we'll hopefully see him in the F1 paddock soon.

"Michael Schumacher making an appearance at an F1 race weekend would be one of those special moments from one of the greatest drivers we have ever seen.

"It would be so welcomed, not just from everyone in the paddock, but everyone around the world. Considering the awful situation he found himself in, and to battle back against it, it would be amazing.

"I hope we continue to hear this positive news more often."

Speaking to Mail Sport, Stewart said: 'It is wonderful that Michael could sign the helmet in this worthy cause - a disease for which there is no cure. His wife helped him, and it completed the set of every single champion still with us.'

"In The Nuclear Era....:" What UK Analyst Said On Operation Sindoor

The recent military action between India and Pakistan was the first instance of two nuclear weapon states engaging in continuous strikes and counter-strikes, which sparked global tensions, Dr Walter Ladwig, a professor at King's College London, said.

Mr Ladwig, who has written an analysis titled 'Calibrated Force: Operation Sindoor and the Future of Indian Deterrence' for security think tank Royal United Services Institute, also said India carried out the military action to punish the terrorists behind the Pahalgam terror attack and not provoke a "wider conflict" with Pakistan.

The Senior Lecturer in International Relations at King's College was speaking to NDTV when he made the remarks.

Mr Ladwig said Operation Sindoor demonstrated a range of abilities the Indian Air Force (IAF) has built over the last decade. "This might also mean that we are in a very undiscovered country when it comes to military operations. In the context of the nuclear era, we do not have an example of two nuclear arms states who have engaged in reciprocal airstrikes like this," he said.

"The year 2019 was a little bit of a watershed moment, and that was very calibrated and orchestrated," he said, referring to the Balakot airstrikes that were carried out in response to the Pulwama terror attack. "We don't have this. The Russians and the Chinese fought in the late 1960s, this was on the ground, and in some cases, the combators were worried about escalation. This is a really new space and this is going to be studied in the decades to come."

The professor credited the Indian government's policies for its precision strikes on terror infrastructure in the neighbouring country. "I see it as an evolution in the government's policies. If we go back to 2016, the surgical strikes (in response to the Uri terror attack), these sort of cross border raids have happened in the past but they were never publicised. They were never made so public. The 2019 airstrikes in Balakot were a break from past precedent... And now you have the next level, which is to say multiple targets are being struck in multiple rounds," he said.

On the intervening night of May 6 and 7, the IAF conducted a series of precision strikes and destroyed infrastructure in nine terror bases in Pakistan and Pakistan-Occupied Kashmir (PoK). The act - codenamed Operation Sindoor - was in response to the April 22 terror attack in Jammu & Kashmir's Pahalgam that killed 26 tourists. The Resistance Front, a shadow group of the banned Pakistan-based LeT terror group, claimed responsibility.

As Pakistan responded to the action, both nations engaged in strikes and counter-strikes for three nights. On May 10, India and Pakistan reached an agreement to stop all firing and military action on land, air and sea, with effect from 5pm.

Operation Sindoor "tried to change the equations that the onus is on the other side", Mr Ladwig said. "...the policy change of not feeling the need to assemble the dossier, connect the dots to say it is incumbent on India to prove in a courtroom sense or beyond the shadow of reasonable doubt that there are these connections... If you fail to deny them (terrorists) the space to operate, then that is enough. We will decide that we may take serious action," he said.

However, the analyst added, putting the onus on the other side does not mean India stops making efforts to put forward a credible case in front of the global audience. "The immediate aftermath of the (Pahalgam) terror attack saw solidarity pouring in for India. There were messages of understanding and support. In the present moment based on recent history, I think India has the benefit of the doubt from its partners but they shouldn't take that for granted,"  he said.

The professor also said that India's counter-strikes to Pakistan's attacks on the country, which lasted for three nights after Operation Sindoor, were essential to avoid doubts over its long-term goals.

"Operation Sindoor sought to inflict punishment on the terrorists and not provoke a conflict. Beyond that, once the tit for tat cycle began, there was a desire to show and demonstrate abilities to strike, do more than the ability to just hit terror infrastructure, and have the ability to show a degree of escalation. It raises questions otherwise as to why did the government stop when it did (Pakistan retaliated) and it gets back to what was the mission in the first place," he said.

He said India's showcase of its ability to retaliate will only lead to a "cat and mouse game". "After the strikes, the smart terrorists will go underground the moment something big happens. They will not be sitting around in known facilities, waiting for retaliation," he said.

"The ability to track and monitor and know precisely where the pin points are going to become harder because groups are going to spend a lot more time on concealment and covering their tracks, making it difficult for intelligence officials," he added.

Iran's Khamenei Fed Up With Trump's "Nonsense" Demands, Defers Future Talks

Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has let his displeasure about Donald Trump and the US administration's demands in the crucial nuclear talks be known publicly, calling them nonsensical and utterly outrageous.

Khamenei, who is increasingly doubtful that a new nuclear deal with the US will see the light of day, has called the US' demands of Tehran ending all uranium enrichment as "excessive and outrageous".

Asked about the progress being made by Tehran and Washington in drafting a new nuclear deal, a visibly annoyed Mr Khamenei said, "I don't think nuclear talks with the US will bring any result. I don't know what will happen."

'NOT NEGOTIABLE'

Four rounds of talks in, Mr Khamenei, frustrated with Washington's insistence over 'no enrichment', said the US should avoid such "nonsense" demands, which Iran has made clear, is "non-negotiable".

Giving a cold shoulder to Washington over its request to hold the next (fifth) round of talks, Iran's foreign minister Abbas Araqchi said, "A date has been suggested but we have not yet accepted it." However, there has been some talk in both capitals about the possible venue being Rome.

'DEFIES LOGIC'

Iran's foreign minister went on to say that the demands being made by the US side during negotiations "defy logic". Such an approach "creates problems" and might derail talks, he hinted. He said Iran is waiting for logic to prevail in Washington before Tehran even considers the next round of talks.

"We are witnessing positions on the US side that do not go along with any logic and are creating problems for the negotiations. That's why we have not determined the next round of talks. We are reviewing the matter and hope logic will ultimately prevail," he said.

Both sides have been combative regarding talks on uranium enrichment, and neither is looking to budge on its stance, leading to, what now seems like, a stalemate. Preempting this, Donald Trump has issued an open-ended threat to Iran - "move quickly or something bad is going to happen".

TRUMP'S WARNING TO IRAN

In recent times - when Iran was reluctant to even come to the negotiating table - Donald Trump had threatened Tehran on multiple occasions, saying Iran would be bombed and shall also face very harsh sanctions if it did not compromise on its nuclear programme. President Trump has already moved in two US aircraft carrier fleet - USS Carl Vinson and USS Harry S Truman - in the Arabian Sea while also ordering the largest-ever deployment of B-2 bombers in the Indian Ocean - at its military base in Diego Garcia.

Satellite images have shown at least six B-2 stealth bombers parked along the military base runway in Diego Garcia - a joint Indian Ocean military base of the US and Britain. That's roughly 30 per cent of its B2 Bomber fleet.

NUKE AMBITION

Steve Witkoff, United States Special Envoy to the Middle East has said that for civilian purposes, 3.67 per cent uranium enrichment is enough. Tehran has already gone far beyond that. Enrichment levels of uranium in Iran are already up to 60 per cent - a short, technical step away from reaching weapons-grade levels of 90 per cent.

"This cannot be allowed," Mr Witkoff has said, while Donald Trump backed him, saying, "Iran has to get rid of the concept of a nuclear weapon. These are radicalised people, and they cannot have a nuclear weapon."

In YouTuber Jyoti Malhotra's Diary, Takeaways From Her 10 Days In Pakistan

YouTuber Jyoti Malhotra, who has several videos on her social media handles detailing her trips to Pakistan, has been hitting headlines for all the wrong reasons. The 33-year-old has been arrested on charges of spying for Pakistan and is being investigated by the National Investigation Agency and the Intelligence Bureau. Now, two pages of her diary have emerged, which give a glimpse of her 10 days in Pakistan. The diary was recovered by the Haryana Police.

"Today, I have returned to my country, India, after a 10-day trip from Pakistan. During this time, I received a lot of love from the people of Pakistan. Our subscribers and friends also came to meet us. The two days we got to visit Lahore were not enough," read the undated entry.

Using adjectives "crazy and colourful" for Pakistan, she said her experience there can't be described in words.

One of her entries had a request to the Pakistani authorities, "Protect the temples there and let Indians meet their families from whom they were separated in 1947".

The content creator from Haryana, who ran the YouTube channel 'Travel with Jo', was arrested on May 16 and charged under the relevant sections of the Official Secrets Act and the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.

Jyoti Malhotra was among 12 people who were arrested from Punjab, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh over the past two weeks on charges of espionage, with investigators pointing at an alleged Pakistan-linked spy network operating in northern India.

The YouTuber's financial transactions and travel details are also under the probe agency scanner. Earlier, police said her known sources of income did not justify her foreign travels.

A forensic analysis of Jyoti's laptop is underway, the police said, adding that they would also question those who were in touch with the YouTuber.

During the investigation, her link to a Pakistani official posted in the Pakistan High Commission in Delhi surfaced. She was allegedly in touch with Ehsan-ur-Rahum alias Danish whom she first met in 2023 during her visit to the Pakistan High Commission, where she went for a visa to visit the neighbouring country. Ehsan-ur-Rahum was expelled on May 13 for "engaging in activities incompatible with his privileged status".

Earlier, Hisar SP Shashank Kumar Sawan said that the YouTuber was being developed as an "asset" by Pakistani intelligence operatives.

"This is modern warfare that is not just fought on the borders. We came across a new modus operandi wherein PIOs were trying to recruit some social media influencers," he said.

The officer also said Jyoti went to Kashmir before the Pahalgam attack and visited Pakistan before that, and police are trying to establish the "links" between these visits.

IPL 2025 Playoffs Scenarios Explained: How MI, DC Can Book Top 4 Berth

As the IPL 2025 league stage nears its conclusion, the competition for the final playoff berth has intensified. With Gujarat Titans (GT), Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), and Punjab Kings (PBKS) securing their spots in the playoffs. With Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) bowing out after losing to Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH), the focus shifts to Mumbai Indians (MI) and Delhi Capitals (DC). Both teams face a unique set of challenges and scenarios to clinch the coveted fourth position. The upcoming matches will be crucial in determining which team advances to the knockout stages.

Mumbai Indians (MI): In Control but Must Stay Vigilant

Currently positioned fourth with 14 points from 12 matches and a robust Net Run Rate (NRR) of +1.156, MI holds a favorable position. Their remaining fixtures are against the Punjab Kings and the Delhi Capitals. Winning both matches would elevate them to 18 points, ensuring a playoff berth and potentially a top-two finish. However, a single loss could complicate their path, especially if it comes against DC, who are direct competitors for the playoff spot. In such a scenario, MI would need to rely on their superior NRR and favorable outcomes in other matches to secure qualification.

Delhi Capitals (DC): Aiming for Consistency

DC stands fifth with 13 points from 12 matches and an NRR of +0.260. Their upcoming games against PBKS and MI are crucial. Securing victories in both would take them to 17 points, solidifying their playoff position. However, a loss in either match would leave their fate dependent on other results and NRR comparisons. The match against MI is particularly significant, as a win would not only boost DC's points but also hinder MI's progress.

Upcoming Fixtures

  • May 21: DC vs PBKS
  • May 22: MI vs DC

These matches are set to be decisive in shaping the final playoff lineup. Teams will need to not only focus on winning but also on improving their NRR to enhance their qualification prospects. As the league stage concludes, fans can expect thrilling encounters and high-stakes cricket.

LSG Star, Who Was Fined By BCCI, In Heated Spat With Abhishek. Reason Is...

Lucknow Super Giants spinner Digvesh Rathi, who was fined by BCCI over his controversial celebration, got into a heated spat with Sunrisers Hyderabad batter Abhishek Sharma during their IPL 2025 match on Monday. The incident took place on the 8th over of the SRH innings after Abhishek was caught in the deep for 59. The youngster looked in sublime form as he slammed 59 off 20 deliveries but he ended up gifting an easy catch to Shardul Thakur. Following the dismissal, Digvesh did his customary book-signature celebration but Abhishek was not happy as the duo got into a war of words. Replays showed that Digvesh gestured towards Abhishek after the dismissal and that could have flared tempers.

Earlier, openers Mitchell Marsh (65) and Aiden Markram (61) hit fifties as Lucknow Super Giants set a 206-run target against Sunrisers Hyderabad in their IPL clash on Monday.

Marsh and Markram were in top form to put on 115 runs inside the first half but LSG lost their momentum in the second during which Eshan Malinga bowled an impressive spell of 4-0-28-0.

While LSG skipper Rishabh Pant (7) endured yet another poor outing, Nicholas Pooran (45) did well to help his side post 205/7.

Markram, Marsh and Pooran have also scored more than 400 runs in IPL 2025, making LSG the first team to have three overseas batters crossing the mark in the same season.

Marsh is the 10th-highest run-getter this season, with 443 runs in 11 innings at an average of 40.27 and a strike rate of above 157. He has five fifties, with the best score of 81.

Markram is the 12th highest run-getter this season, with 409 runs in 12 innings at an average of 34.08, with a strike rate of 148.72. He has scored five fifties, with the best score of 66.

Pooran, who played a fine hand of 45 in 26 balls, with six fours and a six at a strike rate of 173.08, is the team's top run-getter. He is the ninth-highest run-getter with 455 runs in 12 innings at an average of 41.36, with four fifties in the tournament and the best score of 87*. His runs have come at a strike rate of 197.82.

Shreyas' Big Act Goes Viral After Getting Subbed Out During RR vs PBKS Game

Punjab Kings skipper Shreyas Iyer was subbed off at innings break during the IPL 2025 match against Rajasthan Royals on Sunday. Shreyas, who was suffering from a finger injury, was subbed off after scoring 30 off 25 deliveries, did not field at all during PBKS' bowling. While Shreyas was not on the field, that did not stop the Indian cricket team batter from getting involved. During the match, he was seen having a conversation with fielders at the boundary line and even helping stand-in skipper Shashank Singh with the field set-up. PBKS ended up winning the encounter by 10 runs.

Left-arm spinner Harpreet Brar bowled a match-turning spell after Nehal Wadhera and Shashank Singh made bruising fifties as Punjab Kings edged closer to an IPL playoff berth with a 10-run win over Rajasthan Royals here on Sunday.

Brar, who came in as a substitute for skipper Shreyas Iyer -- possibly unwell due to extreme heat -- was introduced in the fifth over and the left-arm spinner walked away with an impressive 3/22 in four overs, helping PBKS to restrict RR to 209/7 in the chase of 220.

The Punjab side had earlier made 219 for five riding on an unbeaten on 59 off 30 deliveries (5x4, 3x6) by Shashank and Wadhera (70, 37b, 5x4, 5x6).

With this win, PBKS (NRR: +0.38) climbed to 17 points and they are second on the table behind leaders Royal Challengers Bengaluru (17 points, +0.48) on net run rate difference.

The Ricky Ponting-coached side needs just one more point to secure a playoff berth for the first time since 2014.

Brar, who mixed up his angles, trajectory, and pace with precision, played a big part in that.

His scalps included the 14-year-old sensation Vaibhav Suryavanshi (40 off 15; 4x4, 4x6) and Indian opener Yashasvi Jaiswal, who had launched a brutal assault up front with his (50 off 24).

Together they flew off the blocks with a stand off 76 runs in just 4.1 overs. Azmatullah Omarzai (2/44) then landed a double blow, sending back skipper Sanju Samson (20 off 16) and Shimron Hetmyer (11 off 12), as RR's chase lost steam.

Dhruv Jurel (53 off 31 balls; 3x4, 4x6) hit form to score his second fifty of the season but it went in vain as Marco Jansen (2/41 in three overs) removed him and Wanindu Hasaranga in successive balls in the last over to end their chase.

"If I Have To Choose Between Hell And Pakistan...": Javed Akhtar

In strong comments after the recent hostilities between India and Pakistan following the Pahalgam terror attack and Operation Sindoor, lyricist and scriptwriter Javed Akhtar has said that if his only two choices are between going to hell and the neighbouring country, he would choose hell.

Speaking at a book launch event in Mumbai on Saturday, Javed Akhtar said he gets a lot of praise, but abuses and brickbats as well from "extremists" on "both sides" - without elaborating on what the two sides are.

"What happens is that if you speak only on behalf of one side, you make only one side unhappy. But if you talk on behalf of everybody, you make a lot more people unhappy. I can show you my Twitter (now X) and WhatsApp in which abuses are showered on me from both sides. A lot of people appreciate me as well, praise me and help me keep my spirits up, but it is also true that extremists on both sides swear at me. This is how it should be, because if one side stops, I will start wondering what I am doing wrong," the lyricist, who was speaking in Hindi, quipped.

"One side tells me you are a 'kaafir' and you will go to 'jahannum' (hell) and the other side says you are a jihadi and should go to Pakistan. Now, if these are my only two choices, I would prefer to go to hell... I was 19 years old when I came to Mumbai and I am what I am because of the city and Maharashtra," he said

Earlier this month, Mr Akhtar had also called out Pakistan for spreading propaganda that Kashmiris are Pakistanis at heart.

"This is a lie. When Pakistan had attacked Kashmir after Independence, Kashmiris had stopped them for three days, our Army reached only after that. The truth is they can't live without India. What has happened (in Pahalgam) has hurt them the most. Tourism has taken a hit. Kashmiris are Indians and 99% of them are loyal to India," he said.

Ishant Picks His "First Choice" For India Test Captaincy, "Only One Who..."

Veteran pacer Ishant Sharma is backing Jasprit Bumrah to lead the Indian team on the tour of England and said Shubman Gill could be handed the job only if the peerless fast bowler is not fit to last the full five-match Test series. The captaincy debate has intensified following Rohit Sharma's retirement from Test cricket, weeks before the Indian team's departure for England for the series that will run from June 20 to August 4. "If Bumrah is fit, I would say Bumrah. That's first choice. He is the only one who has so much experience. But if he won't play all the five Tests matches, then obviously Shubman," Ishant said on Saturday in response to a PTI query on Star Sports Press Room.

Bumrah, 31, has previously captained India in the rescheduled fifth Test against England in 2022, and in the first and fifth Tests of the 2024-25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Australia. However, concerns remain over his fitness.

The pacer had undergone a back surgery two years ago due to a stress-related injury and missed a major chunk of international cricket, including India's triumphant Champions Trophy campaign after he left the field on the second day of the Sydney Test in January. He returned to action for the IPL.

Gill, 25, has impressed as captain of Gujarat Titans in the IPL, leading them to the top of the table this year.

"I was surprised, Virat could've played till 40"

Last Monday, Virat Kohli announced his retirement from Test cricket, bringing down the curtains on a remarkable career in which he scored 9,230 runs at an average of 46.85 in 123 matches, including 30 centuries.

Reacting to the development, Ishant said he was taken aback by the decision, especially considering Kohli's incredible fitness and discipline.

"I think he is mature. He knows what he is doing. I didn't really talk to him after he took retirement. But everyone knows as long as you are playing, it is important to be as normal as you can be. And that is why I have friendship with Virat. We have never tried to put anything on our head," Ishant said on the eve of their IPL match against Delhi Capitals.

"At the end of the day, we are human beings. And we are good friends. He knows what he wants in life and he must have talked to someone. That's why he made such a big decision. Yes, I was surprised. Because he could have played for at least 2-3 years more. He could have played till 40." Speaking further on Kohli, Ishant said, "And right now, the kind of routine he follows and everything... I am not talking about numbers that he should have scored 10,000. That is a different thing.

"Talk about fitness first. If you are fit, you can score 10,000. You can take 500 wickets. You can play as long as you want. But his fitness is the answer even at 36."

Tiger Kills Man In Madhya Pradesh's Balaghat, Eats Up Half His Body

A tiger killed a man in Madhya Pradesh's Balaghat district on Friday and ate a sizable part of the body, a forest department official said.

The incident took place in Katangi forest, some 45 kilometres from the district headquarters, when Anil Aghansingh (33) was collecting tendu leaves used to make 'bidis' (cigarettes in which unprocessed tobacco is wrapped in leaves), he said.

"Half his body was eaten by the tiger. Local staff have been directed to patrol the area, and residents have been asked not to venture out of their homes at night. After getting the post-mortem report, his family will be provided financial assistance as per rules," Chief Conservator of Forests Gaurav Chaudhary told reporters.

According to Kasturabai, a woman who had gone with Aghansingh to collect tendu leaves, the tiger attacked suddenly.

She said she heard a faint noise and found Aghansingh's body when she went to check, following which the forest department was informed.

Test Captaincy Race Over? Report Reveals Big Meetings Before Rohit Retirement

India's hunt for the next Test captain seems to be over, with multiple reports suggesting that Shubman Gill is set to succeed Rohit Sharma in the longest format. Gill, who is already India's vice-captain in ODIs and T20Is, seems to be beating the favourite Jasprit Bumrah to the role, leaving many unimpressed. While Bumrah was India's vice-captain in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, leading the first Test in Rohit Sharma's absence, the Ajit Agarkar-led selection committee reportedly prefers Shubman Gill because of the pacer's poor injury record.

Gill's impressive show as a leader in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 campaign has also impressed many, instilling confidence in the decision-makers to give the baton to the top-order batter.

As per a report in the Times of India, Gill held a lengthy discussion with Team India head coach Gautam Gambhir at the latter's residence when the Gujarat Titans had arrived in the national capital for a match against Delhi Capitals.

The two reportedly spoke for four to five hours, with Test captaincy, understandably, being the biggest point of discussion. When GT took on the Mumbai Indians at Wankhede Stadium on May 6, Agarkar is said to have also had a discussion with Gill.

As per the report, the selection committee is convinced to give long-term captaincy responsibility to Gill, having been impressed by his development as a leader.

"He has shown impressive leadership qualities in the way he has led GT, who are currently topping the table this season," the paper quoted a source as saying.

The timing of these discussions paints an interesting picture. It is to be noted that Rohit Sharma quit as India's Test captain on May 7, well after the first discussion between Gambhir and Gill took place in Delhi. The DC vs GT match took place in the Capital on April 19, well before even the rumours of a Test captaincy change started to float.

As for Gambhir, his next assignment is the India A tour of England, where the senior team's head coach is keen to observe the gen-next of cricketers who are knocking on the national side's doors.

"He wants to observe a few India A players who will be in action against the England Lions," an official had said.

"Pakistan Incorrigible, Lying Is Part Of Its Ethos": Ex-Army Chief NC Vij

The role of the Director General of Military Operations is in focus after the recent ceasefire between India and Pakistan was declared following a call between officers holding the rank in both countries.

The position, which also involves planning and overseeing military operations, was equally important - if not more so - when India and Pakistan fought the Kargil war in 1999. The man occupying the post at the time was Nirmal Chander Vij, who went on to become the Army chief in 2005 and was instrumental in the decision to construct a 740-km fence along the Line of Control.

In an exclusive interview with NDTV on Friday, General Vij (retired) said that, after Operation Sindoor - during which India struck terror bases in Pakistan, including the headquarters of the Lashkar-e-Taiba and Jaish-e-Mohammed - Islamabad has been sent a clear message that its nuclear bluff will not work anymore and that India will go to any extent to make sure its national integrity is safeguarded.

General Vij also said his experience has taught him that Pakistan is incorrigible and lying is part of its ethos.

State-Sponsored Terror

Asked about the recent hostilities, the former Army chief, who has written a new book, 'Alone In The Ring - Decision-Making In Critical Times', said, "In many ways, I think this book has turned out to be prophetic. Because I have written that our western neighbours are so incorrigible and so untrustworthy that you really cannot say anything about them for sure. And despite all the efforts by India to maintain peace, they have been indulging in terrorism promoted by the state."

General Vij recalled his interactions with General Tauqir Zia, who was the Pakistani DGMO during the Kargil war, and said that's when the country's propensity for lying and obfuscating became very apparent to him.

"You could make out that telling lies is a part of their very ethos and ecosystem... Once, I told him, after point 5140 was captured (during the Kargil war), that we have found lots of maps which were duly marked, all he could say in reply was 'ahmaq', which means 'fool' or 'stupid'. That's the problem with them... they will not speak the truth," he said.

'India Will Stay Alert'

The former Army chief said that despite the understanding being reached with Pakistan, India will maintain a state of alertness for "quite some time", until it's clear what line the other side will adopt. This, he said, was also important since PM Narendra Modi has made it clear that any act of terror originating in Pakistan will be seen as an act of war.

On Operation Sindoor, which was carried out in response to the Pahalgam terror attack, in which 26 people were killed, General Vij said some very important messages had been sent out to Pakistan.

"All along, we have been worried about nuclear responses. Our anti-terror operations were restricted to an extent. Even during the Kargil war, we didn't cross the Line of Control... Now, the PM has said your nuclear bluff is off... We will not take it as a serious thing. We have upgraded our response, attacked nine targets and gone into (Pakistan's) Punjab, which we have never done earlier. So, now they know that we will go to any extent to make sure that our national integrity is taken care of and safeguarded," he emphasised.

The former Army chief said the fact that all three forces - Army, Air Force and Navy - were involved was also a key part of the messaging.

"They have been told that we won't hesitate to go to any extent to make sure that they are put into great difficulty. As it is, the country is, economically, totally broke and they are taking loans to pay off their debts. So, they have to learn some place, sometime. The problem in Pakistan is... when Kargil happened, the then Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif said, he didn't even know... so we don't know who to believe," he said.

War An Option?

Asked how things have changed between Kargil and now and whether war is an option, the former Army chief said he thinks India could have "gone to any extent" if the Pakistani DGMO had not called and approached his Indian counterpart last week.

"If you ask a soldier, I don't think war is an option, even though it is our job to fight and we will perhaps be itching to fight at times. But war never solves much. Ultimately, you have got to get to the negotiating table. But to bring the other man to his senses - as Napoleon said, if you put a gun to the other's head, his rationale gets improved and he becomes far more sensible to talk to. So war is an option to bring the other man to a reasonable level of understanding and to get (him) talking more sense," he explained.

General Vij also pointed out that predicting anything about Pakistan is very difficult because it is unclear whether it is the government controlling the Army or vice versa.

"We are a far stronger country and we have shown the world that we are very reasonable. The first briefing, which was given by the foreign secretary and the two lady officers - who did a very good job - it was made clear that it was proportionate. We had gone after the terrorist targets and we had nothing against Pakistan as a country and did not want to escalate. But they escalated... And, in any case, for Pakistan to remain together, I think Kashmir has been a weapon to unite the country. So, it is very difficult to understand their mechanics of functioning," he said.

"China-Made Air Defence System In Pakistan Jammed By Air Force," Says India

In a big reveal, the Government of India on Wednesday, said that the Indian Air Force had successfully jammed Chinese air defence systems that Pakistan had installed all along its border and Line of Control with India. In another significant revelation, India said it carried out its mission in under 23 minutes, showing India's defence superiority over the terror-sponsoring nation.

A statement released by the government gave a closer look at the operational details of Operation Sindoor - India's response to the Pakistan-linked terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir's Pahalgam, in which 26 civilians, all tourists, were killed in a religiously-motivated attack.

'INDIAN ASSETS SAFE'

Amid a deluge of misinformation and false claims emanating out of Pakistan, India's statement asserted the fact that "All strikes were executed without loss of Indian assets, underscoring the effectiveness of our surveillance, planning, and delivery systems. The use of modern indigenous technology, from long-range drones to guided munitions, made these strikes highly effective and politically calibrated."

"India's offensive strikes targeted key Pakistani airbases - Noor Khan and Rahimyar Khan with surgical precision. Loitering munitions were used to devastating effect, each finding and destroying high-value targets, including enemy radar and missile systems," it highlighted.

Loitering munitions are also known as "suicide drones" or "kamikaze drones". These weapon systems hover over or circle a designated target area, searching for a suitable targets before attacking.

'JAMMING CHINA-MADE AIR DEFENCE SYSTEM'

Explaining how India's drone and missiles were so successful during the operation and also mentioning why Pakistan's air defence systems failed miserably in detecting them, the statement revealed that the Indian Air Force had managed to bypass their security system and jam the China-made defence equipment.

Once these systems were down, India managed to carry out its mission within 23 minutes, showcasing the technical edge New Delhi has in the region. "Indian Air Force bypassed and jammed Pakistan's Chinese-supplied air defence systems, completing the mission in just 23 minutes, demonstrating India's technological edge," the statement read.

Meanwhile, the 100 per cent 'Made in India' air defence system used by the Indian armed forces performed exceptionally, the statement mentioned. "Operation Sindoor produced concrete evidence of hostile technologies neutralized by Indian systems," it said, mentioning how Chinese-made PL-15 missiles, Turkish-made UAVs called 'Yiha' or 'Yeehaw', as well as long-range rockets, quadcopters, and commercial drones sent by Pakistan were all intercepted and destroyed by the Indian air defence systems.

To back this by evidence, India has showcased parts and pieces recovered and identified forensically from the wreckage of these projectiles. "This shows that despite Pakistan's attempts to exploit advanced foreign-supplied weaponry, India's indigenous air defence and electronic warfare networks remained superior," the statement read.

ISRO'S ROLE IN OPERATION SINDOOR

Indian Space Agency ISRO also played a crucial role, the statement noted. ISRO Chairman V Narayanan had mentioned on May 11 that "at least 10 satellites are working round-the-clock solely for the strategic purpose of ensuring the safety and security of the citizens of the country."

Reiterating that India's response to Pakistan-linked terrorism was "deliberate, precise, and strategic", the statement made special mention of the fact that India managed the entire mission "without crossing the Line of Control or international border".

INDIA-MADE WEAPONS' STELLAR PERFORMANCE

Giving more details about Operation Sindoor and India-made defence equipment, the statement said, "Beyond tactical brilliance, what stood out was the seamless integration of indigenous hi-tech systems into national defence. Whether in drone warfare, layered air defence, or electronic warfare, Operation Sindoor marks a milestone in India's journey towards technological self-reliance in military operations."

Detailing the equipment used by India, the statement said, "Battle-proven AD (Air Defence) systems like the Pechora, OSA-AK and LLAD guns (Low-level Air Defence guns) were used. In addition to that, indigenous systems such as the Akash demonstrated stellar performances."

In conclusion, the statement asserted that "Operation Sindoor is not just a story of tactical success. It is a validation of India's defence indigenisation policies. From air defence systems to drones, from counter-UAS capabilities to net-centric warfare platforms, indigenous technology has delivered when it mattered most", adding that India has successfully "asserted its role as a hi-tech military power in the 21st century".

Amazon India, Flipkart Get Notices Over Sale Of Pak Flags, Merchandise

The Central Consumer Protection Authority (CCPA) has issued notices to several e-commerce companies, including Amazon India and Flipkart, over the sale of Pakistani flags and related merchandise, Consumer Affairs Minister Pralhad Joshi said on Wednesday.

In its notices, also issued to Ubuy India, Etsy, The Flag Company, and The Flag Corporation, the regulatory body said the sale of Pakistani flags and merchandise would not be tolerated. It further directed the firms to remove such items from their platforms, Mr Pralhad said.

There was no immediate comment from Amazon India, Flipkart or the remaining e-commerce firms on the matter. Click here for India Pakistan News Live Updates

In a post on X, the Union Minister said: "The CCPA has issued notices to @amazonIN, @Flipkart, @UbuyIndia, @Etsy, The Flag Company and The Flag Corporation over the sale of Pakistani flags and related merchandise. Such insensitivity will not be tolerated. E-commerce platforms are hereby directed to immediately remove all such content and adhere to National laws."

On the intervening night of May 7 and 8, India launched Operation Sindoor to target terror bases in Pakistan and Pakistan-Occupied Kashmir, in response to the Pahalgam attack that claimed 26 lives on April 22. The operation escalated bilateral tensions as it led to strikes and counter-strikes between the two nations. On Saturday, India and Pakistan reached an agreement to stop all firing and military action on land, air and sea, with effect from 5pm. Pakistan, however, violated the agreement within hours of it coming into effect.

On May 9, the CCPA issued notices to Amazon, Flipkart and 11 other digital marketplaces over the illegal sale and listing of walkie-talkie on their platforms.

An Amazon spokesperson, however, said the platform is engaging closely with various stakeholders to ensure compliance of laws and regulations.

Besides Amazon and Flipkart, Meesho, OLX, TradeIndia, Facebook, Indiamart, VardaanMart, Jiomart, Krishnamart, Chimiya, Talk Pro Walie Talkie and MaskMan toys were issued notices by the government watchdog.

The crackdown focused on the sale of walkie-talkies without proper frequency disclosure, licensing information, or Equipment Type Approval (ETA), constituting a violation of the Consumer Protection Act, 2019.

Mr Joshi earlier said the sale of non-compliant wireless devices not only breaches statutory obligations but may also pose significant risks to national security operations. These violations contravene multiple legal frameworks, including the Consumer Protection Act, Indian Telegraph Act, and Wireless Telegraphy Act, he said.

The minister said the CCPA will issue formal guidelines under Section 18(2)(l) of the Consumer Protection Act, 2019, aimed at strengthening compliance and consumer safeguards in digital marketplaces. Sellers have been directed to adhere strictly to all applicable regulatory standards to uphold consumer rights and prevent unlawful trade practices, he added.
