10 Items That Will Make Your Bedroom Look Pulled Together
Your bedroom is the room in your house that you probably spend the most time in, so it should be comfortable, practical, and relaxing. But, bedrooms are also an intimate expression of personal style, so nothing about yours should feel generic or cookie-cutter. Simply filling your bedroom with the requisite furniture will leave it feeling like it’s lacking a soul and personality — and like it’s not quite finished.
We’ve looked at a lot of photos of beautiful bedrooms, and when you study them, there are several key elements that they all have in common, despite the range of styles, sizes, and color palettes. These are the furniture and decor pieces that will help your bedroom feel pulled together and nail that desired finished look. We’ve listed those 10 must-have items below, and included tips for incorporating each of them, along with some of our favorites to shop so that you can take your bedroom design to the next level.
1. Well-Layered Bedding
Here’s a no-fail formula for bedding that doesn’t end with an excess of throw pillows: a solid quilt or matelassé (you can never go wrong with white, cream, or gray), a duvet or blanket folded at the foot of the bed (bring in pattern or color here, or stick with the same neutral tone), and three layers of pillows max (we love two big square shams behind a single lumbar pillow).
An easy trick for mastering color and pattern coordination without relying on the catalog set of matching pillows? Choose a pattern you love for one layer of pillows, and then pull out one of the secondary colors from that pattern for the pillows behind or in front of it, the blanket at the foot of your bed, or even your curtains. Repeating an accent color two or three times throughout the room is a sure-fire way to make the space look expertly pulled-together.
2. A Comfy Rug
We can’t think of a room that doesn’t benefit from a large area rug, but in your bedroom, it should be a top priority. If your bedroom has wood or another hard flooring material, an area rug around your bed is a must for adding warmth (literally — imagine getting out of bed on a cold morning!) and coziness to the space. But even if your bedroom has carpet, a contrasting area rug can still add dimension and create definition within the space — layers will always help a room feel lived-in and complete.
3. A Mirror
Your daily beauty and wardrobe routines may happen completely within your closet and bathroom, but that shouldn’t mean you neglect the utility of your actual bedroom, because it will likely affect the appearance as well. A large mirror above your dresser or a floor-length mirror leaning against the wall has obvious practical purposes, but either will also add a hint of glamour to your space while reflecting light, making the space feel larger and brighter.
4. A Headboard
Your mattress-on-the-floor days are in the rear-view mirror, but you might not be quite ready to invest in a whole bed. An easy way to get the look of a bed without the cost (or size) is a stand-alone headboard. Whether it’s tufted velvet or rustic wood, a headboard will provide an eye-catching focal point while adding an extra layer of texture that contributes to that finished look.
5. Multiple Lighting Sources
Having the ability to layer the light in a bedroom is key, and that means having more than a single lamp on your bedside table. Plus, the actual light fixtures contribute to the overall style of your room — a pair of matching lamps flanking the bed will instantly make your room look more complete. Short on space? Try wall-mounted sconces or hanging pendants to free up your bedside surfaces.
6. Nightstands With Storage
Speaking of bedside surfaces, it’s easy to think about a nightstand only in terms of what the top can hold, but we think it’s wise to opt for one (or two, if you have the space) that offer some hidden storage as well. If you have a Queen or King bed and the room allows, consider nightstands that are on the larger side (think 2-3 feet wide) to avoid unbalanced proportions of your bedroom’s main furniture. A small chest of drawers or a console with both open and closed shelving will help eliminate extra clutter — the key to creating a beautiful (and relaxing) bedroom.
7. Artwork
Wall decor of any kind is the finishing touch that often ties everything in a room together, and the easiest place to start in the bedroom is over the bed. A single, large piece or a set of two or more frames will fill out what is almost always a bare space in the room.
8. Pretty and Practical Dresser Decor
Maybe you leave your jewelry, perfume, and makeup out on your dresser all the time, or perhaps you’re more the type to keep everything away in a drawer or cabinet. Either way, there should be a balance of items on top of your dresser that are pretty and add to the overall style of the room (a bud vase, chic lamp, or small stack of books) and are practical and help organize your getting-ready essentials (a mirrored tray, jewelry box, or vase for makeup brushes). A completely bare dresser will look sterile; one that’s disorganized and overfilled will look cluttered — finding a happy medium will add that just-right feeling to your entire room.
9. Curtains
Curtains are one of our favorite form-meets-function decor items, and your bedroom will benefit from both features. Blackout curtains provide privacy and can turn even the brightest bedroom into a dark cave for an afternoon nap, but thanks to all the fabric options available, your curtains can also be an added layer of texture and color.
10. An End-of-the-Bed Bench
We know not every bedroom will have room for extraneous furniture, but a slim bench that sits at the foot of your bed (or a pair of stools) won’t take up much extra space and can make a big impact both aesthetically and functionally. When styled with a couple pillows or throw blanket, a bench will help make your decor look intentionally applied to the whole room, not just your bed.

The 5 Health Tips Ayurveda Taught Me That Changed My Life
I feel like I’m getting the reputation around the office as “the crazy girl who would try anything” — cycle syncing (did it), mantra training (crushed it), face washing with honey (made it my personal revolution). It’s a well-earned reputation, as I very literally would try anything on the quest to become my best, healthiest, most energetic, and happiest self. I suppose I’m a bit of an over-achiever, or as friends and family might say, delusional.
But Ayurveda is different, I promise. It’s not one of the things I heard about and thought ohmygosh I’m going to try it and write an article about my experience and maybe I’ll finally discover the secret to flawless skin/limitless energy/eternal youth. I actually heard about Ayurveda, an ancient practice of medicine, years ago in my freshman year of college in a class on Hinduism (I was a religious studies major). A lightbulb immediately went off and I spent the next few years researching Ayurveda, going to an Ayurvedic practitioner (for one session — the only one in Orlando turned out to be wildly expensive), and even wrote my thesis on the relationship of Ayurveda and religion (sounds smart, doesn’t it?).
What is Ayurveda?
In technical terms, Ayurveda is one of the world’s oldest systems of medicine. In Sanskrit, ayur means “life,” and veda means “knowledge,” so the word itself literally means the knowledge of life. It was developed over 3,000 years ago in India (yes, really), and is still widely practiced all over the world today. The main principle is that the mind and body are inextricably connected, and the goal is to promote good health (of body, mind, and spirit) through balance — instead of fighting disease through medicines and treatments.
Ayurveda teaches that every person consists of the three governing principles of nature — vata (air), pitta (fire), and kapha (earth). Everyone is a unique combination of each of these principles, or doshas, containing different proportions of each. One’s dosha depicts everything from what they should eat, when they should sleep, and basically how they should live. Any mental or physical symptoms are signals that one (or more) of the doshas is imbalanced.
You can find out your dosha based on physical characteristics and personality — it’s basically a personality test, your medical records, and a really accurate Buzzfeed quiz all rolled into one. Finding your dosha and lifestyle recommendations fit for you is a detailed exploration that can be done with an Ayurvedic practitioner, but you can also take a quiz (I like this one from Sahara Rose) for a quick answer.
I’m not completely submerged into the world of Ayurveda — I still go to an M.D. for annuals, regularly indulge in queso with Ruffles, and don’t practice all of the important rituals that Ayurveda offers. While I feel like one day I’ll reach my spiritual awakening and feel compelled to fully submerge myself Eat Pray Love style, I’m still in my post-college, trying-not-to-get-hungover-from-after-work-drinks phase, so I definitely have some work to do to get there. However, there are lessons from the ancient practice that have, yes, changed my life, and useful tips that can be applied to anyone’s health and wellness journey, no matter your medical preferences. Here are the wellness tips and rituals I’ve borrowed from Ayurveda that have actually stuck with me and have changed my life:
1. “Healthy” means something different for everybody
Of course you know the basics of “eating healthy” — stick to natural, clean foods. Simple, right? So why is there so much debate over diets? Ketogenic, paleo, Whole30, Mediterranean, low-carb, raw, dairy-free — the options for what healthy eating trend we’re “supposed” to be following feels overwhelming and limitless these days. So why all the debate? Probably because every body responds to foods and diets differently — something that Ayurveda has had figured out for thousands of years.
If you’re working on eating healthy, don’t just follow diet trends because your favorite celebrity or blogger promises weight loss or glowy skin. Eat based off of what’s best for your body, knowing a different way of eating might be better for someone else’s. Ayurveda tells you to eat depending on your dosha or what dosha is imbalanced — warm, heavy foods balance vatta; cool, refreshing food is best for pitta; and lightly cooked or raw preparation is best for balance in kapha. I’ve spent my life eating salads thinking this was “healthy” for me, but got consistent stomach cramps and nausea after eating them. Switching to warm, dense foods like stews or curries has relieved my digestion issues because it’s not just “healthy,” it’s healthy for me.
2. Scrape your tongue!
I get it, this one sounds a little out there, but hear me out: Ayurveda teaches that we can learn a lot from our tongues. Not only can our tongues help determine our doshas, but they can tell us about our health. It’s time to get graphic — the fuzz, film, or bumps on your tongue show up in the mornings if you have clogged organs or undigested food. To avoid reingesting the toxins on your tongue, it’s crucial to scrape them off. Before I even drink my morning cup of water with lemon, and for sure before any cup of coffee, I always brush my teeth and scrape my tongue to get rid of all the toxins that are showing up in my mouth to avoid swallowing them back into my body. I use a tongue scraper, but you can also use the tip of a metal spoon.
3. Use the six tastes in every meal
Ayurveda recognizes six different tastes: sweet, sour, salty, bitter, pungent, and astringent. Every fruit, vegetable, grain, nut, etc. has a particular “taste,” or combination of a few, and you should be getting a balance of tastes at every meal. The idea is that each taste has a specific connection with one of the doshas.
- Sweet: carbohydrates and natural sugars
- Sour: organic acids and fermented foods (probiotics)
- Salty: salts (which contain crucial minerals)
- Pungent: spicy foods (ignites digestion)
- Bitter: dark, leafy greens and herbs (anti-septic and detoxifying qualities)
- Astringent: legumes; raw or dry produce
Not only does including each of these tastes in each meal balance doshas, but it also ensures you’re getting all the nutrients your bodies need. Biologically speaking, it makes perfect sense — each of the tastes represent the different chemicals our bodies need. It’s easy to reach for a simple meal when life gets busy (aka every day) — a turkey sandwich, a plate of pasta, an easy-to-make soup. But these “easy” meals are lacking a lot of the potential nutrients we could be getting and what our bodies need a balance of to be truly healthy. Besides, adding spices, herbs, and lemon juice makes meals so much more flavorful. For basically every meal I eat, I go through a checklist to make sure there’s a little bit of every taste, not only for the optimal nutrients, but also for the optimal taste.
4. Don’t just focus on what you eat, but how
Digestion problems generally include IBS, nausea, stomach pain, weight gain/loss, and bloating; but digestive issues can also show up as blemishes on the skin, hair loss, or sluggishness. Obviously what we eat is a big part of the equation — eating a wide range of nutritious foods (specific for our doshas, of course), while avoiding the foods that upset our systems. But the way we eat is just as important as what. The fix to digestive issues could be as simple as making sure your posture is upright and your stomach is relaxed, or eating slower and without distractions.
Ayurveda also suggests that digestive problems occur because the digestive fire (or agni) is weak, so igniting it before meals is crucial to proper digestion. Adding spices like cumin or turmeric to meals will aid in digestion, or trying a teaspoon of fresh ginger with a few drops of lime juice and a pinch of salt before meals can activate salivary glands to produce the proper amount of digestive enzymes. Ayurveda focuses so much on proper digestion, as it recognizes that it’s the way our bodies absorb nutrients and feel its best. I eat slower, better, and drink ginger tea every single day to keep my digestive system on track (literally).
5. Schedule Your Day Based On Your Body’s Needs
Not only do the kapha, pitta, and vatta doshes make up our “selves” as a whole, but they also make up times in the day. Ayurveda essentially tells time through these different cycles of the doshas, and also determines when is best to do certain activities — called Dinacharya.
While it’s nearly impossible to follow a strict schedule these days (that 10pm bedtime and 6am wakeup? Aint nobody got time for that!), I have made a lot of shifts that have helped immensely. When I can, instead of squeezing in a workout first thing in the morning, I wake up slowly and peacefully. I also schedule checking off tasks and sending emails in the later morning/early afternoon and wait to write articles (like this one) until later in the day when I’m more creative. It’s also helped me to understand what’s going on with my energy levels throughout the day and identify what my body really needs.
- 6am-10am is the time when kapha is most active, meaning you should be peaceful and grounded. Wake up before the sun around 6am and start your day by meditating, eating a nourishing meal, and tending to self-care.
- 10am-2pm is pitta time, when you have the most energy of the day, so you could try to get your most difficult tasks accomplished during this time or squeeze a workout in. When the sun is at its highest peak (aka noon), your digestion is at its most powerful, so your lunch should be eaten around noon and be your biggest meal of the day.
- 2pm-6pm is when vatta is the most active, meaning your creativity is at its peak. If you can, schedule your most creative activities at work for the end of the day. Try to paint, write, or cook in the late afternoons and evenings.
- 6pm-10pm is the second cycle of kapha time, meaning you’re ready to be more peaceful and grounded, which makes sense as you’re winding down to prepare your body for rest. Tend to self-care or meditate during this time, much like in the mornings. According to Ayurveda, you should be asleep by 10pm because…
- 10pm-2am is another cycle of pitta, aka a burst of energy and alertness. This is why many of us don’t feel tired anymore if we’re getting into bed past 10pm, and it’s hard to sleep. It’s also why we get a surge of social energy when we stay out late at night.
- 2am-6am is the second cycle of vatta, so back to a creative state. This is when most of our dreams happen as we sleep, since the body is longing for creativity.

Bye Felipe Is the Dating Book We’ve Been Waiting For
If using dating apps is “going around the block,” I’ve given a full-guided tour with pit stops and free souvenirs. (This means, yes, I’ve extensively used dating apps for a while now.) When I started college, dating apps were officially in full swing, meaning traditional ways of meeting people kinda flew out the window. So, I delved right into online dating, and truthfully, don’t quite know how to date any other way since.
After spending years on dating apps, I definitely have stories where guys get rude or abusive when I’m not interested or reject them. From the time a guy called me a bitch because I refused to hook up with him to the dozens of unsolicited nude photos, I entirely understand some of the negatives of our “swipe” culture.
After being fed up with the online dating community and looking for some solace, I stumbled upon Bye Felipe, an Instagram page dedicated to exposing guys who harass women on dating apps. Not only is the account hilarious (some of the best captions in the IG game), but it addresses an issue that so often gets shoved under the rug when it comes to online dating.
Alexandra Tweten, the founder of Bye Felipe, created the account for the same reasons. After many conversations with friends about, let’s just say it, douche-y guys on apps, Tweten felt like she needed to do something to bring awareness to this situation. A few years later, and Bye Felipe has over 450 thousand followers on Instagram and has received over 4,000 submissions. So basically, I’d call Tweten a total boss.
In August, Tweten released Bye Felipe: Disses, Dick Pics, and Other Delights of Modern Dating, which goes through the various issues she sees submitted to Bye Felipe, her advice for using dating apps, and her take on modern dating culture. As an avid swiper and lover of the Instagram account, I had to see what the book was all about. Let me tell you, this is basically the dating app guide I’ve needed my entire life. Here’s why:
She gives advice
If you’re looking for the ultimate guide to online dating, this has to be it. Tweten gives you the low down on every app, from the ones we all know (Tinder, Bumble, Hinge) to the hidden gems (Rava and Huggle) to the weird (Plenty of Fish and Farmer’s Only). Everything she writes is hilarious and so relatable that you feel like you’re talking to your BFF who happens to run a highly successful Instagram and has expertise on online dating.
She tells you what to avoid when it comes to meeting guys, such as guys with a list of no’s such as “no fat women” or “no feminists” (more like no thank you), men who only have one photo, or men who use very obvious copy-paste messages just asking to hook up (unless that’s exactly what you’re looking for!). Tweten isn’t telling you exactly how to go about online dating, but she gives her insight (which includes talking to hundreds of people over the last few years about online dating) in a way that makes you realize all the potential issues with online dating.
She tells it like it is
There’s no sugar coating in this book. Tweten tells you exactly what these apps are actually like. She’s not going to tell you that it’s OK to meet someone at his apartment for the first time (always find a public place first!), and she surely focuses on how to spot a f*ckboy (we all know the type) and why it’s pertinent that you get the heck out of that toxic relationship. There’s no “well, you COULD change him” in this book. She tells it exactly like it is, and online daters need that (even when we don’t want to admit it).
She talks about safety
One of the biggest issues with online dating that no one talks about is safety. We think it’s so normal to meet someone online and not figure out his or her background or meet up in a private place. There are certainly stories of creepy or murderous people on dating apps, but we can get caught in the moment when we think we meet THE ONE (you’ve been there).
She talks about how to put safety first when going on dates (always share your location with a friend!), what to do if you think someone might be stalking you, how to talk about safety with a potential partner, and more.
There’s a whole chapter on toxic masculinity
We can chat all day about crazy dating stories, but what exactly is the cause of this type of behavior? Tweten argues that it’s toxic masculinity. You know, the idea that the stereotypes of what masculinity should be can be harmful and cause a whole array of disastrous issues for mankind. She discusses the importance of understanding what toxic masculinity is and is not and goes into detail about why she believes it’s such a factor in online dating harassment.
She offers solutions
It can feel so frustrating to go through all of this. Yes, there are problems with online dating, but HOW do we do it differently? It can seem like everyone is meeting their perfect partner, and you’re just getting match after match who disrespects you or only wants to hookup. Tweten doesn’t just give it to you straight and then expect you to figure out the rest for yourself. She gives ideas, such as educating these guys, hitting them with some humor, or just straight ignoring them.
I will warn that this book is not for the faint of heart, meaning if you do not like foul or profane language or sexual content, you might want to sit this one out. Otherwise, I’d suggest buying a copy for yourself and a friend.

Why You Should Cancel Your Weekend Plans and Binge Watch Shrill
Growing up, I never felt represented as a plus-size woman. To be fair, I only started wearing plus-size clothes when I came to college, but I’ve always been larger than my peers. Watching TV, reading magazines, or following the news, no one ever looked like me. The only women I saw who resembled my body played the funny, supporting friend. She never got her own story.
Fast-forward and 2019 is brimming with high-achieving women in all areas who defy the original standards of beauty we’ve seen in our culture for decades. People are beginning to take notice that women above a size eight are worthy of the love story or the coming-of-age narrative. Women who look like people in the real world are taking over our screens, too.
When I saw the first previews for Hulu’s comedy Shrill, I knew I was going to love it. I’ve read Lindy West’s memoir by the same name in the past, and it really changed my perceptions on my body and how I take up space. However, I was surprised by how much I would relate to the various themes of the series.
Annie, played by the terrific Aidy Bryant, is a young woman struggling with an overbearing mother who thinks she always knows better, a boss who doesn’t see her talent, and a friend with benefits who treats her like sh*t. However, unlike what society and other people might want from her, Annie, an overweight woman, has no interest in changing her body to get what she wants out of life.
There are tons of reasons to love the show. The acting is impeccable, the cast is diverse and thoughtful, and the screenplay is relatable and easy to understand — the show absolutely deserves five stars. However, as a plus-size woman, there is more to this show than a fun, entertaining way to spend my Friday night.
I found myself resonating with Annie throughout the entirety of the show in ways I’ve never seen in shows or films. From online trolls who use her weight to tear down her writing to realizing the morning after pill only works on women under a certain weight, it’s obvious that the writers of this show understand the experience of being a plus-size woman in our culture. There are issues and situations I thought I was the only one who ever experienced, and this show illustrates those perfectly.
Instead of some elaborate backstory about how she came to be overweight and how it’s caused her pain throughout her life (a story we’re told all too often), the show starts abruptly and never tries to make her weight her sole identity. Annie’s on a journey to understand that being overweight has nothing to do with her identity. Having extra fat on her body is just a fact about her.
This is the kind of show I wish existed when I was in a period of self-loathing. The girl who was afraid, ashamed, and anxious that her body took up space, especially more space than all the girls at her school, could have used this story. Shrill tells plus-size women that there are things more important than your body and regardless of your size, you are entitled to respect from the people around you.
This show at its core is definitely a comedy; however, I found myself crying almost every episode because I felt heard in a way that has never been portrayed in the media. Representation is a powerful thing, and I hope Shrill inspires both media companies and plus-size actresses, writers, directors, and producers to make more shows and films about the experience of plus-size women.
Have I totally convinced you to watch the show? If not, here it is: it’s only six episodes in the first season. If you’re dedicated, you could binge the whole season in one sitting. If that’s not a genius marketing tactic, I’m not quite sure what is.
OK, so, when’s season two? I’m ready for it.

The Everygirl’s 10-Piece Spring Capsule Wardrobe
Spring is FINALLY here and the thing I’m most excited about is obviously the new season of Game of Thrones but also clothes! I recently went wild for storage and bought like four clear boxes to put all my chunky, winter sweaters in and now I’m on a closet clear out binge and ready to welcome some new energy (read: pretty, floaty tops, sneaks, Jon Snow) into my life.
1. The Midi Skirt
Remember how when skinny jeans first came out and everyone was like “well I can’t wear skinny jeans because I have thighs”? That’s how I used to feel about midi skirts. Like if I tried to wear one it would look less “chic” and more “Laura Ingalls Wilder cosplay”. But! PLOT TWIST. I have done a complete 180 on these bad boys and now I want a midi skirt in every color, situation, and pattern. Cover me in midi skirts. Anyways, they are perfect for spring okay bye.

Style It
Sweater / Midi Skirt / Crossbody / Slide Sandal / Sunnies
2. The Sneakers
There is something undeniably cool and sK8terBoi about a good white sneaker. Even if they are pretty much a basic meme by now. Grab your board and your Tony Hawk energy drink (is this it? am I doing skater?) and hit the town in your new kicks.

Sweater / Light Wash Jeans / Sneakers / Pop of Color Bag / Sunnies
3. The Straight Leg Ankle Jean
I was recently in Ireland with my sister in law and amidst the velvety hills and lush green stretching in every direction, she goes “Why is everyone here wearing floods?” Lol, but truly the straight leg ankle crop jean is the trendiest trend to trend right now. Jump in on the action.

Graphic Tee / Straight Leg Jean / High Tops / Crossbody
4. The Boilersuit
Coveralls are a Big Deal for spring and I’m on board, even though the first time I saw my favorite fashion blogger whip one out I was… perplexed. That’s fashun for ya, amiright. I feel like the key to mastering the trend is to go less “coal miner” and more “Glossier uniform”.

Gold Hoops / Denim Jumpsuit / Heels / Suede Bag
5. The Loafers
Never stop stopping for a classic loafer. For spring, I wear them in lighter colors and fabrics — think canvas, suede, denim, etc.

Suede Jacket / Printed Dress / Loafers / Gold Hoops
6. The Ribbed Top
More elevated than a basic tee but still just as comfy. A great layering piece because what is spring except piling on layers and saying “wow this weather!” at least five times a day.
Style It
Ribbed Top / Tie-Waist Trousers / Heels / Pearl Studs / Tote
7. The “All You Need is a Light Jacket!” Jacket
Miss Rhode Island approved.

8. The Mini Dress
Time to unleash your legs! But first, use this.

9. The Classic Button Down
When I was little, I used to browse the J.Crew catalog and dream of the days when I could wear a pencil skirt and a turtleneck and a blazer and a ginormous chunky necklace whilst saying things like: “gather the meeting!,” “spreadsheets look awesome!,” “retirement!”. This early conditioning means that nothing feels more “adult off duty” than a dark wash pair of jeans and a classic white button down. Mmmm.

10. The Tiny Bag
I loooove a tiny bag. It’s like minimalism to go. Because all you really need is a lip balm and your phone. And maybe a credit card. The detritus of 8 million old receipts, random business cards, Nature Valley wrappers (why do I buy these?! they are so terrible), three pairs of sunglasses, and a single, dusty mint can stay at home.

Denim Jacket / Wide Leg Pants / Tee / Slide Sandals / Tiny Bag / Earrings
