Landlord-Approved Design Updates That Will Make a Huge Impact in Your Rental
Living in a rental property can have its perks — no property taxes, no responsibility for maintenance, flexibility to move when you want — but there are also frustrating downsides to not being the owner of your home, and the limited design changes you’re allowed to make is one of the biggest. Living in an apartment or rental house is a universal right of passage for young adults, which means so many of us are living among dreadful off-white walls, dated wood cabinets, and carpet we’d rather not have. But that doesn’t mean you can’t turn your rented space into one that’s thoughtfully designed and uniquely yours.
Your design options in a rental are certainly limited — you won’t be knocking down any walls or relocating your bathroom — but you might be surprised by what you can do that won’t keep you from getting your security deposit back. We’ve rounded up four easy design updates that will make a huge impact in your rental space, and best of all, they’re totally reversible. Of course, before you make any changes that are even semi-permanent, you should check your lease or consult with your landlord to make sure you aren’t violating any part of your rental agreement. But in most cases, as long as your apartment is back to the way it started when you move out, you shouldn’t have any issues.
These four totally reversible updates will make a temporary apartment feel more like your home.
Painting
Let’s start with one of the most obvious design updates you can make in your rental. Painting your walls can make a huge difference in the overall feel of the space, the way light is reflected, and even how big or small a room feels. Why all the landlords of the world got together and agreed that a yellowy off-white was the best color choice for wall paint is beyond us, but know you’re not alone if you got stuck with that or some other drab color scheme. A fresh coat of bright white paint can completely transform and brighten up a room, or opt for a more modern neutral like light gray or a pale blue to give some new life to your tired space.
Just know that most landlords and management companies require you to paint the walls back to the original color before you move out — yes, even if your choice is a much more attractive one. They’ll probably paint the entire apartment before the next tenant moves in anyway, but it’s still smart to do the painting yourself to avoid any steep fees they may charge you if you don’t.
If you’re interested in painting anything other than the walls (cabinets, trim, doors or windows, etc.), we’d suggest discussing it with your landlord directly, since that can be harder to undo. Go into the conversation prepared to discuss how it would be a lasting cosmetic improvement for his or her property, what color you’d like to use (we’d suggest something neutral), and the possibility of hiring a professional — it could push them from wavering into agreement territory.
Temporary Wallpaper
If you haven’t yet discovered the world of removable or temporary wallpaper, let us be the first to say welcome. These rolls of colorfully patterned paper or fabric self-adhere to your walls (no messy glue required) and then peel off when you’re ready to move on — literally or just design-wise — without damaging your walls or leaving any sticky residue behind. If you aren’t up for painting your apartment, but feel like it needs some color or interest on the walls, temporary wallpaper is the perfect solution.
There are tons of companies selling temporary wallpaper, including mainstream home decor stores like Anthropologie, Target, and West Elm, so you have plenty of options when it comes to patterns, styles, and even textures to choose from. A few wallpaper-specific online shops worth checking out are Chasing Paper, Tempaper, and Graham & Brown.
A bold-patterned wallpaper packs a big punch in a small space or as an accent wall, adding personality and color to an otherwise plain room. Just look at how much of an impact bright, lively wallpaper had in this bathroom:
If dealing with whole sheets of wallpaper still sounds like a big undertaking to you, there are options to start even simpler. You can accent your walls with temporary decals, allowing you to essentially DIY your own pattern in as small or large of a space as you want. Add stripes, polka dots, or florals as you please with the same easy installation and removal process so there’s no fear of not getting your security deposit back.
Switching Out Light Fixtures
Along with paint, changing the sources of light in a room can have the biggest impact on the overall look and feel of the space — and it’s probably one of the elements least often changed and personalized in rental apartments and houses. In addition to adding lamps throughout your space (which we highly encourage), you can also alter the lighting in your rental by switching out the existing ceiling fixtures or add wall sconces without making any permanent changes.
We’re willing to bet any experienced renter reading this is familiar with the overused flush-mount ceiling lights we can affectionately — and accurately — call boob lights. (If not, lucky you, but click here). If you have any of these or other unattractive light fixtures in your rental, you don’t have to be stuck with them. Almost any light fixture can be swapped out for one that’s similar in size and weight (without making any changes to the existing electrical box in the ceiling) with a little know-how and maybe the help of a handy friend or relative.
There are much more attractive flush-mount fixtures out there if you still want one that’s unobtrusive and puts out a lot of light, or if you’re interested in emphasizing form over function, consider a modern chandelier or hanging pendant. A beautiful fixture will draw the eye up and instantly become a statement piece in your space. And most importantly, it will make your rental home feel uniquely yours, even if it’s just a temporary one.
Most apartments don’t have wall-mounted lights (other than bathroom vanities), but if you like the look of wall sconces, you can install them in your rental without hard-wiring them in. So many affordable wall sconces come with a cord, so you just have to mount it on the wall (no more intrusive than hanging a frame) and plug it into a wall outlet. You can even skip the cord and fake a hard-wired-in sconce by using a battery-powered light instead of a regular bulb. As with everything else, you’ll have to reverse those light changes when you move out, so keep the fixtures you take down in a safe spot until you do. But the good thing with lights is — unlike paint and wallpaper — you can take these with you to your next home.
Changing Cabinet Hardware
One of the easiest changes you can make in your rental is changing the hardware on the cabinets in your kitchen and bathroom. Most apartments and rental properties are built on the cheap, and sometimes the choices made on details like cabinet hardware show that the most. You might be surprised how big of an impact such a small change can make, but swapping the metal finish, size, or style of your knobs and pulls can totally transform your kitchen or bath. And if you do so in addition to painting those cabinets, you’ll feel like you just got a totally new kitchen.
When picking out new hardware, you do need to be mindful of what’s already installed. You can’t swap a single knob for a handle without drilling a second hole, and vice versa. If you do want to make a big change — or add hardware to currently bare cabinets (another cheap building decision) — you should discuss it with your landlord first. If they agree to the swap, just be prepared to leave whatever hardware you install when you move out since you can’t go back to where they started.
What are your tips for updating a rental space?

15 Easy Ways to Keep Yourself Accountable
New year, new you, right? Well, it’s not always that easy. We’ve all been there — New Years Eve comes and we make promises to ourselves; we’re going to be the healthiest, happiest, and best we can be! Sounds like a good goal, doesn’t it? But then the end of January comes to a close, and our motivation starts to waver as the joy of the holidays trickles into hard, busy days and a routine that leaves us unable to catch our breath. March comes in the blink of an eye, and by the time July rolls around, our New Years resolutions seem like a far off dream. You know this cycle all too well, don’t you?
Well it’s time to break the cycle — 2019 is going to be your year. You really can be the healthiest you’ve ever been this time around, because we’ve found the secret formula that the vicious, endless cycle has been missing: accountability. Holding yourself accountable to reach your goals ensures that when the going gets tough, you don’t give up. And you know what happens when you don’t give up, right? It snowballs into bigger goals and even more motivation. By the time 2020 rolls around, maybe you won’t even feel the need to make any New Year’s resolutions at all. With 15 easy ways, here’s how to hold yourself accountable to achieve your healthiest self, ever:
1. Get in the right mindset
Before setting your goals, you must know your “why.” Take some time reflecting or journaling on why accomplishing this goal is important to you, and how it will make a difference in your life. So when you’re going through the day-to-day, you won’t be thinking, “I have to wake up at 6am to exercise.” You’ll be thinking, “I want to wake up at 6am to exercise, because it makes me feel so much happier and healthier throughout the day if I get a workout in in the morning.” Know your “why” and remind yourself of it daily.
2. Prepare what you need in advance
Do you prefer morning workouts? Lay out all your clothes next to your bed, and even untie your sneakers so they’re ready to go in the morning. Pack up your gym bag or prepare anything else you need, like setting out your water bottle and car keys. If you workout in the afternoons and your lifestyle allows it, consider wearing your workout clothes before your workout, like when you’re running errands or doing work. Having everything ready to go will make it so much easier to get yourself to workout, and will put you in the mindset that this workout will happen. Preparation also works for nutrition goals, too — meal prep makes it much less likely for you to resort to takeout after a busy workday or snack on unhealthy choices like chips and cookies.
3. Get an accountability buddy!
Have a friend or work wife who also wants to stick to health goals? Make them your accountability buddy and motivate each other by exchanging healthy recipes, sending motivational quotes, and checking in to see how the other is feeling or keeping up with their goal. Yes, you should be holding yourself accountable, but it doesn’t hurt when someone else holds you accountable, too! You’ll be much more motivated feeling like you’re in this together.
4. Set specific small goals every week
“Lose 20 pounds” is a far off goal that will leave you disappointed and unmotivated — trust me. If you want to be healthier, set smaller, more specific (and non-scale related!) goals throughout each week to be a healthier you. On Sundays, think about what you want to achieve that you can manage in your lifestyle — fit in four workouts total, run three miles instead of your usual two, lift 10 extra pounds, or add greens to two meals a day. And then work up towards achieving your goal, so by the time the week is over, you’ll feel accomplished, proud of yourself, and more motivated to set harder goals for the next week.
5. Use apps to track your stats
Since it’s hard to always keep yourself accountable, why not let an app do it for you? There’s a reason heart rate monitor workouts like Orangetheory are so popular — you see the stats, so you know how hard you’re working, and whether or not you reached your goal. Consider a fitness tracker that will track activity like heart rate and steps, and then set goals based on what you can track (i.e. 13 minutes of 80 percent maximum heart rate, or 12,000 steps a day), so you know if you need to be working harder or putting in more effort. For nutrition, it’s also helpful to use a food tracker like My FitnessPal to see if you’re overeating or not getting all the nutrients your body needs. There’s no arguing with the hard facts!
6. Plan your workouts like you’re scheduling an appointment.
Try signing up for a workout class — the cancellation fee in itself will be enough to keep you accountable! If you workout with a trainer, that means you both must agree on a meeting time. Having a set plan will hold you accountable to show up, making it harder to make excuses not to. If you prefer solo workouts, don’t just plan to workout “sometime tomorrow” or whenever you “have time.” Guess what: you will never “have time!” Schedule workouts in advance, write them into your planner or calendar, and honor that workout — show up on time, be prepared — like you would any other appointment or meeting on your schedule.
7. Reward yourself for reaching small goals.
If you plan to workout four days a week for two weeks and reach that goal, or plan to eat healthy and end up resisting office rice krispy treats not once, not twice, but three times!? You deserve to be rewarded! Of course, your rewards should not be counterintuitive to your goal, like a “cheat meal” or piece of cake. That’s just training your brain to see your efforts as a have to and making unhealthy food the goal, instead. Try rewarding yourself with the leggings you’ve been wanting, a sports bra that you’ll love, or even a facial. Or plan yourself a movie night in at the end of the week, complete with homemade popcorn and a glass of wine (even goals can have a little fun!).
8. Workout with friends
Even with our busy lifestyle, we still want to fit in social time with all our best friends! That usually means an after work drink or meeting up for dinner, but why not make your social schedule healthier and more attune to your goals? Go on a walk to catch up with a friend instead of meeting for coffee. Cancel the brunch plans one week and schedule a spin class and post-workout smoothies with your girl friends. Not only will you get the quality time in a healthier way, but working out with a friend or two will hold you accountable to make sure you don’t skip the workout.
9. Journal your progress
Here at The Everygirl, we could talk about the benefits of journaling until we’re blue in the face (and often do!). It creates a space for mindfulness, thoughtfulness, and purpose, and can help you achieve all of your goals. Get a journal that’s specific for your health goals (like here and here), so you can record your progress. You can also use any blank notebook (or the notes in your phone!) and every day, write about what you did towards your specific goal, and how you felt during the day.
Not only will journaling about your goals on a daily basis keep you motivated and proud of yourself, but knowing you’re tracking your daily progress will hold you accountable. It’s a lot less tempting to skip the workout or order takeout when you know you’ll feel so much less proud of yourself when you’re writing about it later.
10. Have a plan B
So you slept through your alarm and missed your morning workout? Or are feeling under the weather and just don’t want to go to spin class? Have an easy and flexible backup plan so that you just don’t completely give up when your plan doesn’t work out. Going on a 30-minute walk after dinner or doing a yoga YouTube video before hopping in the shower are great ways to fit in movement and keep yourself feeling motivated and good about your goals, even when your plan doesn’t work out. Having a backup that you don’t need to schedule when your plan falls through is crucial to staying on track.
11. Create a vision board
Surround yourself with images and words that are motivating to you. If mantras are your thing, come up with your own, write it down, and post it on your mirror or somewhere where you’ll see it often. You can also start a vision board filled with motivating images like a picture of yourself from when you remember feeling healthy and happy, or a magazine cut-out of someone achieving your goal (like crow pose or running a 5k). You can also post healthy recipes you’ve liked, or pictures of women you admire for their drive and ambition. Visually seeing your goal as often as possible will keep you motivated.
12. Find ways to stick to your goals that are enjoyable for you.
If you want to eat healthy but hate salad, don’t eat salads! If you want to get fit but can’t run a mile to save your life, don’t force yourself to run right off the bat. Instead, find the things you enjoy — the foods you like, the exercises that make you have fun or feel centered. Learning how to enjoy achieving your goals is much more likely to make them stick long-term than forcing yourself to eat or do things you don’t enjoy. Instead of the same old salad and chicken breast every day of the week, get invested in cooking and trying new things. Experiment with healthy recipes like crockpot curries or spaghetti squash, and test out workouts to find one that you’ll not only enjoy, but will look forward to doing, like a dance class or yoga routine. It will be the easiest and most fun way to reach your goals, ever!
13. Build your own habits
Thanks to BeyoncĂ©, we know that it takes 22 days to create a habit. Think about what little habits you could make to help yourself achieve your goals. Would an hour of uninterrupted phone time a day help you stay motivated? Would getting to bed an hour earlier make it easier for you to wake up for your morning workout? What about snacking on carrots instead of pita chips when you’re hungry before dinner? Commit to building smaller, healthier habits for just 22 days, and watch how easy it is for you to stick to them. After a while, getting enough sleep, choosing the healthier snack, or doing something good for yourself really will just become, well, habit.
14. Read, listen to, or watch something positive every day.
I love Real Housewives just as much as the next girl, but let’s be real — bingeing it every night before bed certainly does not help out with health goals. Instead, listen to a motivating podcast on your way to work, read a chapter from a self-improvement book before bed, or if reality shows really are more your cup of tea, stream a show like Queer Eye that will inspire you to be your best self. Filling your time with inspiration and motivation will make you excited to reach your goals.
15. Look for one small victory every day.
Every single day, look for a victory you made towards your final end goal. It could be that your jeans are fitting looser, or that you did an extra 10 crunches, made a smoothie for breakfast instead of getting an Egg McMuffin, or successfully turned down the donut at the office that day. Feeling like you’re accomplishing something, no matter how small, and making one small step (or pant size) towards your final goal feels much more motivating than a distant goal that feels out of reach. Let the victory in itself be its own goal, and get excited for whatever victories the next day will bring — you’ll reach your end goal in no time! 2020 will be so impressed.
What do you do to stay motivated and hold yourself accountable? Let us know what works for you in the comments!

How to Care for Your Engagement Ring
Congratulations, you’re the proud owner a sparkling new engagement ring! With all the excitement, comes a big sense of responsibility for keeping your new bling safe and sound from loss, theft, and wear and tear. This includes everything from insurance policies to learning about DIY ring cleaning. Read on for the lowdown on engagement ring TLC.
1. Whether before or after the proposal, insurance is key.
If your partner didn’t have the ring insured as soon as it was bought (forgive them as they probably had a lot on their mind!), now is the time to explore options. If you have homeowners or renters insurance, an engagement ring can typically be protected by simply adding a rider to the policy. As an alternative, there are also independent companies that specialize in jewelry insurance. A jeweler or appraiser will have to determine the value of your ring for insurance purposes. In most cases, an expert at the store where the ring was purchased should be able to help. It’s also a good idea to have your ring re-appraised every year since values often change over time.
2. Know when to take it off.
As tempting as it may be to keep that sparkler on all the time, there are a number of everyday scenarios that can damage your new jewelry. Exercising, showering, cooking, cleaning, and applying makeup are all risky activities for your ring. While this may sound like a lot, the upside is that many of these situations occur at home, meaning that keeping a designated spot where you drop your ring upon walking in the door could make all the difference.
3. By the same token, know when not to take it off.
Far too many stories exist of women leaving engagement rings behind in public restrooms. To avoid becoming one of them, don’t take your ring off to wash your hands in bathrooms. In this case, the hand soap and water combination is less damaging to your ring than the potentially huge risk of losing it.
4. Keep it clean.
For maximum sparkle, most experts recommend cleaning your engagement ring at least once per month. Luckily, this can be done at home and the process isn’t difficult. All that’s needed is some warm water and a mild dishwashing liquid. Let the ring soak in this mixture for about 30 minutes (or even overnight) before removing and scrubbing it with a soft baby-bristled toothbrush. Finally, rinse under warm water while making sure that the drain is covered.
Since paper towels can scratch the ring, either use a cotton towel or let it air dry. If you feel the need for a more in-depth professional cleaning, you can take it to a jeweler twice a year. In that case, while you’re having your ring professionally cleaned, be sure to ask the jeweler to check the prongs on the setting as well, to ensure that you lovely stone will stay in place.

5 Steps to Creating a Content Marketing Strategy
You keep hearing that content is king, or queen, or some other form of highly influential royalty. You feel like you should have jumped on this content marketing train like yesterday.
But every time you sit down to write, you end up staring at the content intimidation tactic that is the blinking cursor on a blank screen. Then you give up, shuffle content creation around on your to-do list, and promise that you’ll get to it later.
Sound familiar?
Creating a content strategy that makes your ideal audience feel like “Thank God, I found you!” doesn’t have to be intimidating or frustrating. It can be as simple as talking to your audience and having a plan that works for your business. Below are five steps to get you started.
But first, what is a content marketing strategy anyway?
A content marketing strategy is a documented plan for using content (written, oral, visual, etc.) to attract your ideal audience, bringing them into your sales funnel to convert them into clients/customers, and finally, your biggest fans.
I like to think of the strategy in terms of a movie set and you (the content strategist) are the director. You let actors (the content) know where to stand, what to say, and where and how to say it to elicit the response you want.
Now that that’s out of the way, let’s start creating your content strategy.
1. Determine your commitment
Content marketing is a long-term strategy to attract your ideal clients and customers, not a get-rich-quick scheme. It takes time, discipline, and a commitment to meeting deadlines, promotion, responding to comments, and more.
Before you get started on your content marketing strategy, set goals and delegate tasks among your team. Schedule weekly meetings to check in, create new ideas, and help one another. If you’re running your business solo, you’ll absolutely need regularly scheduled times for content creation.
Whether in a team or on your own, be realistic about your time. If blogging once a week and sending a newsletter twice a month is the most you can manage, don’t shoot for any more than that. Setting yourself up for failure breaks trust with your audience that expects what you’ve promised. You don’t want burnout here, you want a streamlined process that works for your schedule.
2. Know your audience
I can see your eyes rolling already. You can’t seem to get away from this “know your audience” thing, and here’s why: how can you sell your product or service if you don’t know who you’re selling to?
Knowing your audience goes beyond creating a fictional persona you’ve saved to a Pinterest board. It’s more than assuming that because “Lauren” shops at Whole Foods and practices yoga you know what she’s about. You don’t. Where she shops and how she spends her time only scratches the surface of who she is.
Talk to members of your ideal audience and take notes. Sit down to coffee with them or schedule a Skype chat to gain insights into who they are at their core and as individuals, not stereotypes.
3. Analyze your data
I promise, it’s not as tech-ed out and scary as it sounds. Simply compile your notes into a spreadsheet to get a comprehensive view of what your ideal audience wants. You’ll start to recognize trends in how they think and feel. Use those recurring emotions and their words to fuel your content.
Talk about the benefits (how your audience wants to feel) and then let them know how your product or service can help them achieve that feeling. You want to connect with them on an emotional level where it counts.
4. Make a plan
Content calendars are popular for a reason. They help you stay organized by taking all of the ideas out of your head and putting them into a process that makes sense. You never have to sit staring at that nagging cursor trying to figure out what to say and where or how to say it again.
To make creating content even easier, set themes for each month. Themes narrow your focus on a subject that appeals to your ideal audience and makes it easy for you to establish yourself as an expert.
Setting a theme also helps you create several streams of content. For example, if my theme for the month was content strategy, I could turn each of these five steps into their own blog post. Then I could create additional content like a sample content calendar or audience analysis spreadsheet to supplement each post that readers could download for free.
5. Create, create, create!
You’ve determined your commitment and set goals, talked to your ideal audience, found common trends, and used this data to create monthly themes and ideas for content. High-fives for everyone! Now, it’s time to create the content you feel comfortable with.
If blogging isn’t your scene, don’t do it. If the thought of being in front of a camera sends you into an anxiety-ridden spiral, video probably isn’t for you. Your audience can spot inauthenticity from a mile away.
Focus on what you do best and outsource the rest. And when you’re done, remember to promote it. Reach out to influencers in your field and encourage followers on social media to share. You’ve worked too hard to keep your awesome new content to yourself.
What are some of your tips for creating content? Let us know in the comments.

Did You Overspend Over the Holidays? Here’s How to Come Back From It
Sugar hangovers aren’t the only thing we wake up with in January! Some of us also find ourselves with extra credit card debt or a hole in our budget. At such a fun time of year, it’s easy to overspend and get off track with your financial goals. Even if you carefully laid out a holiday spending plan early in the fall, unexpected costs and travel add up. The good news is it’s a perfect time to revisit your overall financial plans, and getting spending under control is a big part of that! Here’s how to recover:
Get Back to Your Budget Tomorrow
Don’t delay in getting back to your regular budget and everyday spending habits. It can feel tempting to throw in the towel for a couple of weeks post-splurging and delay tackling some of the habits that snuck in over the holidays. But it’s a similar mentality to what the best nutritionists share about splurging: don’t have a “the diet starts on Monday” mentality.
With your very next expense, get back on track. Dining out and groceries are some of the sneaky budget categories that get out of whack this time of year, so look there first for places to reset. If that means that your morning coffee budget is usually a $2 black small cup, then that’s what you’re getting tomorrow! Take some tough love with yourself and wean off of the fancy lattes or high end groceries that supported your cocktail parties. This time of year is also when we’re already thinking of eating out less and cooking a little healthier at home, so these two goals are nicely aligned!
Make a Detailed Recovery Plan
Again with the tough love. This will look a little different for everyone, but if you happened to rack up some credit card debt this holiday season, start there first — and quickly. It might be a little cringe-worthy, but open up all those December bills and see what you’e really dealing with! In the holiday rush, it is easy to forget expenses that happened earlier in the season, so you want to be sure you have a complete picture of what needs repair.
Then, be a little disciplined with how you plan to approach a payoff. Be detailed and challenge yourself to define exactly what you can payoff and by when. That might even vary depending on if your pay is a little less predictable. Something like, “I’m taking 10 percent out of my fun money budget for the next four paychecks to start paying off this debt. Concrete numbers and deadlines make it much more likely you’ll reach a payoff goal.
Revisit Your Revenue Streams
For all of us, budget cuts can only go so far. At some point, the more fulfilling option can be finding ways to add to your income. This can look a number of different ways, and early in the year is a perfect time to think about all of these options. Have you been eyeing a side hustle? It’s time to act on dream or bulk up your client prospecting to bring in a little more cash. Could your closet use a clean out? Find the best ways to sell some of your old favorites, which likely got bumped out of rotation by a few holiday purchases anyway! Not only will you bring in some money, you’ll start the year feeling a little lighter.
Lastly, it’s probably an annual goal setting at work for many of us. It’s a perfect time to start strategizing about how to spend any performance increase or practice your negotiating skills to tee-up a salary increase.
Do a Thorough Hotwash
Federal agencies use the term “hotwash” as a bit of an after action report to review what went well and didn’t go well during emergencies. It’s a reference to evaluating things “after the fact,” and is a great way to think about the blur of post-holiday spending.
Plan out your own hotwash and go back and review all of your spending. Being as specific as possible helps you actually gain some insight from your expenses. Start with matching your initial holiday budget by family members and friends to what you actually spent. Doubled the anticipated cost for your gift for mom? It actually might remind you that your sister still owes you for half of that!
You’re also likely to find expenses for people you didn’t remember to budget for or categories of spend you weren’t anticipating. Office pals, building supers, neighbors, and hair and nail professionals are all categories I regularly forget to budget for on my first holiday pass, and yet can make up a big portion of expenses! Further, I used to not have a separate line item for wrapping paper and Christmas cards, but after a few Target runs, those become too much to leave out of the holiday budget as well.
Whatever you find out about your own spending patterns, document it all right now while it’s fresh on your mind and leave it for your future self. This might also mean that you’ll need to start holiday saving a little earlier or adjust savings rates, so set a notification to remind you whenever your next personal budget review happens.
Savor the Splurge
Splurging and feeling guilty is as unhealthy a cycle in finance as it is in nutrition! At this point, what’s spent is spent (unless you’ve still got some returns!). Costs during this time of year usually result in memories, traditions, and are in the pursuit of celebrating with your loved ones. Instead of wallowing in the spend and feeling overly guilty about your choices to go off budget, think about how much you appreciated the holiday experiences and memories you had.
Further, know that someone in your circle probably experienced some budget busting moments as well, meaning it can be even more appreciated if you go the extra mile to send a thank you for any gifts, experiences, or hosted events you enjoyed from someone else.
How do you financially reset after holiday spending?

10 Things You Need to Do in Rome
Rome. The Eternal City. It might be called this because honestly it would and could take an eternity to see everything this beautiful Italian capital has to offer — but let’s be serious, no one has time for an eternity, not even Romans. Luckily for me though, I had one month. An entire month (thanks to a combination of work opportunities and a generous boss), and at 34, with a busy career and a life based in New York City, it was a gift. A rare chance that once you have a career or reach a “certain age” people don’t or can’t take, and certainly aren’t really given. And if you get the chance, you’re usually giving something else up. But for me, what I lost (hello heartbreak) or maybe gave up, gave me an opportunity to embrace and immerse myself in an unfamiliar culture, language, and experience as an adult. And as it turns out, you can really learn a lot about a city and yourself in 30 days!
So I’m sharing my advice and tips on how you can lap up the la dolce vita lifestyle and truly enjoy Roma. Some of these are expected and in your guidebooks and some hopefully will be hidden gems and in my personal book, worth seeking out.
1. See the sights at sunrise
By far the best idea I had during my time in Rome was to head out before sunrise and walk around the sleepy city as it woke or stroll the city streets after midnight while it slept. Whatever kind of person you are, (you know who you are) these are the ideal times to see places like the Trevi Fountain, Colosseum, Spanish Steps, the Pantheon or any piazzas before they are packed with crowds wielding selfie sticks, jostling for pictures, and queuing for entry. And the early morning or late night times give you an advantage many don’t experience.
2. Walk the walk
This may sound like a ridiculous or obvious tip, but Rome really is best seen by foot. And I know I live in NYC so I walk everywhere, but walking is one of Rome’s greatest treasures. Everywhere you turn is a beautiful street scene with Italians living their life, or an ancient ruin or monument. Walking also lets you see all the beautiful churches that are free to enter, house world-class art, and have breathtaking architecture that anyone can appreciate. You really get a feel for the vibe of this city by walking, and luckily most Romans are never wearing heels so you don’t feel underdressed. Leave the heels behind and embrace the streets and sights by foot.
3. Breakfast bliss at Roscioli Caffè Pasticceria
Please go to Roscioli Caffe Pasticceria. I mean it, this place is a dream. And I’m sad I only decided to go the last 2 weeks I was in Rome. Hidden behind its unassuming (and easy to miss) exterior is a tiny, sometimes hot and vibrant coffee bar packed with both Romans and tourists alike. If it’s crowded (and it will be) squeeze your way into a place at the marble bar like a true Italian. Before you know it, you’ll be given ice-cold flavored water and asked what you’re having. Order a cappuccino (it’s the only time of day you can really have one) and a cornetto salato. A croissant that rivals Paris’s version, this one is made with just French butter and egg. It’s then stuffed with prosciutto and mozzarella or cured salmon and cheese with coriander seeds on top. It’s the perfect start to any day and while you won’t stay long you will leave on cloud nine from your breakfast bliss.
4. Feast al forno
Do yourself a favor and when you see the word “forno” on an awning, go inside. Al forno means cooked in the oven and these bakeries always have the best, quickest take away food options. It’s hard to really get a meal to-go in Rome, so al forno is Rome’s alternative to a New York slice or (dare I say bagel). Order by weight — it’s a fun experience from start to finish.
Some of my favorites included Forno Campo de Fiori, which is a great spot for grabbing a few different kinds and then going outside to walk around the bustling Campo dei Fiori market. Also you can’t miss the porchetta at Antico Forno Roscioli. Yes, it’s the same group as the breakfast suggestion, but I give credit where credit is due and Roscioli’s pizza does not disappoint. Baked in five-foot-long slabs, you also order by weight and whatever freshness comes out of the oven. Some is seasoned simply, like the pizza rossa, which is brushed with a bright tomato sauce, that’s it. But, the true star is the porchetta. Equal parts crispy and just enough salty fat, the porchetta is layered onto their crispy focaccia topped with thinly sliced roasted potatoes and fried pieces of rosemary. It is out-of-this-world delicious, and you will thank me later.
5. Experience the art of aperitivo
If you normally eat dinner around 7pm, you will be out of luck while in Rome. In fact, most restaurants won’t even be open yet. Generally, Italians start dinner around 8:30pm — or even later, which is why aperitivo is so important! Do as the Italians do and enjoy an aperitivo and all the salty chips, olives, and roasted nuts that accompany them. For a fancier one check out Hotel de Russie’s gorgeous garden bar. The drinks are a splurge, but the aperitivo is plentiful and has a good variety of options.
Otherwise meander in the Monti neighborhood, which in my opinion is a cooler version of Trastevere, which is also worth visiting but can be very touristy and very crowded at night. In Monti, wander the hip cobblestone streets and head to Piazza della Madonna dei Monti for some of the best people watching. The best part is its central proximity to sites, such as the Roman Forum and Colosseum, which are also beautiful at sunset.
6. Check out the Capitoline museums
Museums in Rome are not hard to come by. From the Vatican museums and Galleria Borghese to the National Museum of Rome, there are numerous collections that are worth a visit — but I’m here to tell you that the Capitoline Museums are also worth a visit. Located on the Piazza del Campidoglio, up on Capitoline Hill, the museums are made of two buildings facing each other with the impressive piazza in the middle. It houses an incredible collection of ancient Roman bronze and marble statues, medieval and Renaissance art, and many elaborate frescoes – but the best part is that it has one of the best views of the Roman Forum. And because you have to pay an entry fee, it’s never that crowded. Head over for “magic hour” when the museum offers a reduced entry rate and the sun hits the Roman Forum with an unbelievable golden glow. Be sure to follow signs for the Tabularium, which is the underground tunnel that links the two buildings and where the view is. Then head up to the cafe order a prosecco and sit in the gorgeous park right across the way.
7. Venture out to a villa
If you have an extra day or need a break from seeing ancient ruins and museums venture outside of Rome to Tivoli which is only a 30 minute trip if you manage to catch the fast train (and an hour if you find yourself on the slow version). The little Lazio town is beyond charming and full of history, stunning gardens, and gorgeous natural vistas — it’s like you’ve been transported into a dream.
Tivoli is also home to Villa D’Este, a 16th-century villa famous for its terraced hillside Italian Renaissance garden, and especially for its profusion of fountains. It is now an Italian state museum, and is listed as a UNESCO world heritage site. Be sure to give yourself some time, there’s lots to see and many Instagramable photos to be taken. Have lunch at Ristorante Sibilla, which dates back to 1720. The restaurant is perched on a cliff next to the entrance to the Villa Gregorio reserve and literally up against the Temple of Sibilla. Sit under the breathtaking pergola and enjoy the view and some delicious food.
8. Gelato, gelato, gelato
You’ll want to end each and every meal with gelato, and in my opinion you can never go wrong with gelato as you stroll the streets. But when you’re looking for a really special experience, head to Giolitti. Truth be told, I can’t take credit for this because it was actually my boss who took me there the first time and it’s his favorite. It’s super old school with table service (waiters in white tuxedos) as well as a take away counter, but the gift is when you sit outside for service. Make sure you visit the original location near the Pantheon.
9. Ditch your diet
Again, this may seem like a ridiculous, and maybe even obvious tip — but it’s an important one. Food plays a major part in discovering the best of Rome, so when you’re there, embrace it. Try the local specialties like spaghetti carbonara, cacio e pepe, involtini, and saltimbocca alla romana. Go outside of your comfort zone. And always when dining out, order the house wine over a bottle of wine. Not only does it taste just as good, but also it’s much cheaper, and it’s usually served by the liter and comes in cute carafes. I could write an entire novel dedicated to where to eat so for now here are a few great finds:
There are just 14 tables at this cozy little place, located near some major tourist attractions — think Pantheon and Piazza Navona so be sure to book ahead and trust me when I say its worth it given the tourist location. Try the spaghetti carbonara and lemon pasta with arugula, and finish off with veal saltimbocca alla romana. All are traditional and amazing.
The best time to come is during warmer days so that you can enjoy their beautiful terrace outside. It can be a little touristy because Eat, Pray, Love was filmed there, but who doesn’t love a little film action. Prosecco, prosciutto, and mozzarella are things I’ll never leave without, and a simple macaroni with butter, mint and Parmesan really blew my mind.
La Fraschetta di Mastro Giorgio
Venture over to this restaurant in the historic district of Testaccio, an area that may not be Rome’s prettiest neighborhood, but its rich history more than makes up for it. The service is great and inviting. Order the zucchini flowers stuffed with mozzarella and anchovies. They also have a great selection of cured meats and cheeses. And I know I’ve mentioned porchetta already but this is also a great one, served with piping hot salty focaccia. For pasta, try the spaghetti with chicory, a very delicious green topped with melty pecorino perfection.
10. Live like a local
Forget the hotels and stay in an apartment whenever you can. With so many options it’s easier now than ever to find places to stay that aren’t hotels. I think you truly get a sense of the culture when you’re able to live in an apartment, go to the grocery store to pick up some local favorites, and make coffee at home when you first wake up. One of my favorite memories is waking up everyday in my apartment and using the Italian coffee maker (which isn’t anything like American ones) and watching the neighbors get up. It’s a new routine you can embrace no matter how long you’re staying. Speak Italian when you can — a ciao, or grazie mille goes a long way, and Italians truly embrace you trying to speak their language.
