I Cooked All My Meals At Home for 2 Weeks—Here’s What I Learned
Last year my best friend became a member of the Dave Ramsey cult. I don’t say this to belittle his financial knowledge (his advice and methods are SPOT ON), but if you’ve ever met someone who is committed to the Church of Ramsey® you know the fever with which they passionately save and budget. After I got over my initial annoyance (at one point she refused to pull over the car for french fries because she hadn’t budgeted for them), I wanted to see what all the fuss was about so I downloaded his app EveryDollar.
For the first month you set a budget (i.e. what you think you spend on things) and then track all your expenses, placing them in their category and watching where you spend your money. Let me fast forward and tell you that after 30 days your mind will be blown and you’ll realize how much more you spend in certain areas thank you think. I thought I probably spent $80 a month eating out seeing as most of our friends and family live out of state, I work from home, and my fiancé’s job doesn’t allow him more than 4 days off a month. I thought I was being generous with the $80 point considering I couldn’t remember the last restaurant I went to.
If you’re currently rolling on the floor laughing at how naive I was, you would be correct. I spent up my $80 in the first 10 days like it was nothing. Let’s be clear: $80 is not nothing. If it flew out of my wallet and was floating in the street, I’d run into some serious traffic to retrieve it. For most of my life, I didn’t have the financial means to eat out whenever I wanted. I suddenly realized I was spending my hard earned money on tiny convenience related purchases that at the end of the month amounted to NOTHING.
$5 for a smoothie on the way home from the gym, $3 for iced coffee, $12 for a to-go salad, $7 for popcorn at a movie, $2 for forgetting my water bottle at Orange Theory, $7 for a latte and muffin to work at a coffee shop, $24 for pizza and cinnamon knots because it’s Friday night and I deserve it… etc. etc.
It’s easy to part with $3 here and $4 there, but believe me when I say those purchases ADD UP. And what they add up to is a large tangible sum of money you would much rather have in your savings account, subtracted from your student loan debt (hi, me) or in the form of say — I don’t know — a Dyson hairdryer. Okay, so I wasn’t spending that much eating out, but you get what I’m saying. I’d rather spend my money on something than a bunch of small, I can’t even remember them, nothings.
Thought I never made it to cult status, I used the EveryDollar app for about 6 months before falling off the wagon. We started budgeting for a wedding and the general idea of our finances became “spend as little as possible and everything else must go in to savings.” And even though I have done a complete 180 since that first month with the app, I knew I had slipped in to some old (and new) bad habits.
So here set out my quest to break the cycle of irresponsible spending and eat every single thing at home for two weeks to see how much money I could save and shine light on my financial indiscretions. To give me a break from grocery shopping and meal planning, we partnered with one of our favorite companies, Blue Apron, who allows you to create quick and delicious chef-designed recipes at home. All of their meals can be made in 40 minutes or less and they send you the exact ingredients you need straight to your door.
If you want to try Blue Apron for yourself, click here to get $50 off your first two weeks!
Keep reading to find out how my two weeks went (it started with quite a few grocery trips) and what a to-go food devotee learned in the process:
1. You have to make it easy on yourself.
On day one I hit the grocery store to grab the essentials and stock our house. Because so many of my purchases were based on convenience, the trick became making it INCREDIBLY convenient to just eat at home. This meant two things: having options available, and to meal prep. I stocked our pantry and fridge with healthy snacks, snacks for when you don’t want to be healthy but you should anyway (these tortilla chips are amazing), options for a late night sweet tooth (which in desperate times would normally end in me asking my fiancé to bring a snack size mcflurry on the way home), and the basics that a meal can be made around in a pinch (think chicken breast, ground beef, etc. and keep any extra in the freezer in plastic bags with the date on them of when you froze them).
Next, let’s talk meal prep. I loathe spending half my Sunday in the kitchen cooking but there’s no denying how easy it makes every other day of the week. When I have a plan for the week (and pre-made meals in containers waiting on me), there’s less of those ‘open up the fridge and stare blankly’ moments. I know what I have, what I can make, and how long each thing is going to last me.
I make better decisions, spend way less money, and just feel better. With the right options, it was easier and healthier to just eat the food that was in my fridge waiting for me.
So how can you replicate this? Make a plan of attack for your week. Shop with a purpose rather than just running to the store and buying the ingredients for a meal you want to make. Sit down and think “what will I have for breakfast/lunch/dinner on x day.” You don’t have to make it ALL on Sunday, but have a plan — know what you have on hand — and set yourself up for success.
I also found that making meals that you can assemble and slightly tweak each day breaks up the monotony. For me, that means tacos or taco salad because maybe Tuesday I’m feeling very cheese and sour cream but on Wednesday I want mostly black beans and pico. Having the option to tweak and play with the pre-made ingredients breaks that idea of meal prep crushing your culinary freedom. Another favorite is this adult lunchable that’s easy to pack and tweak from day to day.
2. Meal delivery makes eating at home enjoyable — not just a chore.
We all get sick of eating (and prepping) the same things week after week. Inevitably you get caught in a rut. The first meal I prepped was 5 days of chicken and roasted broccoli for lunch. By Thursday, I was over it but knew I had my Blue Apron delivery coming so I pushed forward and by the time the workday ended, I was excited about cooking again.
I love Blue Apron because the recipes are always something I’m excited to eat, but wouldn’t have thought to make on my own. The proportioned ingredients and easy directions mean I can pop open a bottle of wine (turn on a little music) and have an seriously-satisfying experience cooking. It completely breaks the monotony of heating up your meal prep day after day after day.
I also love that unlike when I try to branch out on my own, I’m not left with a ton of random ingredients afterward (I only needed 3 tablespoons of heavy cream, what do I do with the other TWO CUPS?!?!). Blue Apron only sends you what you need to create the dish so your fridge is free from overflow and you truly spend less than what you would if you were eating out.

3. Plan for times when your meal prep just won’t cut it.
There are some days when I get off work and I can’t stomach the idea of lifting a pan. I’m mentally drained and need to immediately lie potato-style on my couch and let Netflix breathe the life back into my body. These are times when I would normally order a pizza or get a to-go salad and call it a night. But because of my challenge, that was no longer an option. I found that having similar options in the freezer kept me from returning to my bad (and expensive habits).
Let me break it down for you…
I bought a box of cauliflower pizzas at Costco. You get 2 pizzas for $11. I usually cut the pizzas in half and only eat one half in a sitting because if I make the entire pizza, my brain can justify going back for one more slice over and over until I have eaten the whole thing and then my stomach is in pain, (I blame it on the semi-thin crust and just how delicious the pizzas are). That means I can eat pizza 4 times for roughly $2.75 per meal, compared to the delivery minimum for Dominos which is $15 and I MAYBE get two meals out of it before it starts to reheat in a less than pleasing way or is consumed by someone else in the house. And if you’re counting calories, my half a pizza is around 400 calories, while a slice of Dominos is usually around 300. AND WHO EATS A SINGLE SLICE?! Absolutely no one.
The same goes for wine and cheese night. Around day 9, I was really craving some social interaction so I roped my girlfriend into an appetizer night at my house. I ended up spending about $16 for our rather sizable charcuterie board and she supplied the wine. At our regular appetizer joint the board alone would have been $19 (and might I add, smaller) + $7 per glass of wine (we’d probably have 2 glasses each) + tax and tip. We both saved money and got to do it in our leggings around my coffee table.
The trick is to find what works for you. Keep it on hand and don’t beat yourself up if you can’t eat your pre-portioned meal every single time. Give yourself some room to breathe. It will still be there tomorrow!
4. You’re basically going to look like Gigi Hadid, you’re welcome.
Maybe I’m exaggerating slightly, but at the end of 14 days I felt better and knew I had spent significantly less money (which in turn made me less stressed about the wedding). Huzzah! I noticed that my body felt lighter, I experienced less sugar cravings and overall more energy, and my stomach was definitely not as bloated. There’s a major benefit to knowing exactly what is going into your body and even with the best restaurants and healthy to-go options, you can still never be 100% sure how everything is made.
Did I miss my favorite to-go sushi rolls? Hell yes. Did I immediately buy one on day 15? You betcha. But what I realized from this challenge is that so many of the purchases I had grown accustomed to were pointless. The small changes I made, can save me a ton of money over time. If I made my coffee and put it in an insulated container and took it with me on my errands, I didn’t even want to stop for Starbucks. Our $10 bag of coffee from Costco lasts us months while a $4 drink from Starbucks doesn’t even last me an hour. If I’m really craving a frappuccino will I stop and get one? For sure. But if I’m only buying the drink to get a caffeine fix to keep going… not worth the spend.
I cannot stress enough: these little things add up and can eventually keep you from your long term financial goals. At the end of the day, it’s just not worth it. I’ll be taking charge of my finances and keeping my fridge stocked and stick to cooking at home as much as possible. You know… except for the occasional need for truffle fries.

15 Plus-Size Brands Our Readers Love
Being a plus-size woman, finding clothes that are on-trend, show off my figure (only occasionally do I want to wear a potato sack), and are good quality is a challenge. Oh, and I can’t always pay over a hundred dollars for one top. Basically, we can’t always walk into a mall and have a plethora of options to wear on a night out or a last-minute wedding guest dress. So, plus-sized women have had to find their go-to retailers to get everything they want in their sizes.
Luckily for us, our readers have found tons of great brands and lines that offer quality plus sized clothes at an affordable price. Here’s where they love to shop:
1. J.Crew
It’s no surprise that we love J.Crew here at The Everygirl. The quality is amazing, the sales are to die for, and now, us plus size ladies can get in on ALL the fun!! From workwear to graphic tees, J.Crew is giving us all the ~modern prep~ vibes available in sizes up to a 24 or a 4X.
2. Madewell
I’ve already discussed my love for Madewell and its addition of plus sizes, but I’m not the only one who’s obsessed. Samara, who wears a size 18, said: “I am absolutely thrilled that Madewell is finally expanding their sizing as it has always been one of my favorite brands to peruse, but I haven’t been able to find many things in my size until recently.”
3. LOFT
I don’t know how I didn’t know the magic of LOFT until recently. LOFT Plus goes from sizes 16 to 26, but if you’re a 12 or 14, you can still shop their amazing straight size line. Also, LOFT Plus is now sold in select stores across the U.S.! Check here to see if any of your closeby stores are now carrying plus. YAY!
4. City Chic
If you’re plus sized, you know that sometimes it’s just comforting to shop with retailers that totally get you. That’s City Chic. Its entire line is for plus sized women, ranging in sizes 14 to 24. If you’re looking for occasion wear (think: fall wedding!), you’ve come to the right place.
Angela says to watch for sales! “I’ve gotten some great deals and get tons of compliments on the things I wear.” She also says to pay attention to the site, as they do an outlet a few times a year where you can score some great finds for much less than you’d spend normally.
You can find City Chic on its website, Nordstrom, and Macy’s.
5. Who What Wear for Target
Stylish pieces at an amazing price? Yep, that’s Who What Wear’s line for Target in six words. Available in sizes 0X to 4X, WWW offers every fall trend you can think of, from leopard print midi skirts (I honestly might buy two in case I wear the other too much) and gorgeous check prints to utilitarian jumpsuits and wide leg pants.
6. American Eagle
In case you didn’t know, American Eagle carries up to a size 16 in stores, 20 online, and carries XXL online. Abby says: “As crazy as it sounds, I’ve been wearing AEO jeans since middle school, and they’ve continued to provide me with the best fit from when I was a size 6 in middle school, all the way through high school, college and into adulthood. They’ve got so many fit options, they last for years and years, and it’s really hard to beat the price.”
Aerie, American Eagle’s intimates, and loungewear line, is also incredible. They offer the cutest swimsuits every summer, as well as the coziest pajamas and loungewear to get you through the cold seasons.
7. Nordstrom
Nordstrom kills it every season with its plus size options, especially with its in-house brands such as BP. It’s great to walk into a bigger retailer and find more than just a corner of the store dedicated to you. Aside from their in-store options, Nordstrom online has a huge selection of plus size brands online.
Samara explained that she loves Nordstrom, too, because “Nordstrom’s website has really clear sizing and explains to size up or size down, based on how certain pieces fit.” A great website makes shopping online SO much easier.
8. Eloquii
If you aren’t putting everything at Eloquii in your cart, go do it rn. Their size range is impeccable (14-28!!), and they offer styles that fit a wide range of body types. Their Viola line is specifically made for women with hips that are 1-2 sizes larger than their bust size.
Katie said: “Eloquii is far and away my favorite plus-sized clothing retailer. I purchase most of my workwear here and am always 100% pleased with the quality and the fit. I feel like they are also willing to take risks in regard to plus-sized fashion (why can’t we wear crop tops and leather joggers, too?!), and I applaud them for that.” Oh, yes!
9. Old Navy
It’s a known fact that I’m obsessed with Old Navy, but it looks like I’m not the only one! They offer sizes XL and XXL in stores, and their plus size shop online is also filled with amazing styles. Angela said that Old Navy is her go-to for basics, and she loves that the XL and XXL in stores are true-to-size.
10. ASOS Curve
Our favorite UK retailer has some of the best plus size options on the market, from basics to lingerie to fun going out pieces to accessories (larger belts and longer necklaces are a thing, too!).
Katie LOVES ASOS, too! “ASOS is my go-to for casual or party items. Easy basics like camisoles, white button-ups and the like are very accessible on ASOS and at a good price point. They have fun, bold pieces for a night out, as well as pretty little dresses for showers, weddings, etc.”
11. Gal Meets Glam at Nordstrom
Who ISN’T obsessed with Julia Engel by now?! Her style is impeccable, and luckily for us, she’s brought her eye to Nordstrom with her Gal Meets Glam collection! Her line goes from a size 00 to a 20, and her dresses are perfect for both special events and casual wear if you like to get a little glam (pun not intended).
Morgan, size 14, said that this line is “so exciting because I love her and have followed her forever and want to support her for doing that and being so size-inclusive.”
12. Torrid
I’d say most plus size women know and love Torrid, but there are a few hidden gems you might not know about. First of all, their size range (10-30) is out of this world. While I think most would say a size 10 and 12 aren’t plus size, the range just gives these women some more options! I’m obsessed with their lingerie, specifically their underwear. I won’t get into my anatomy rn, but let me just say, they’re the perfect cut for plus sized women and so, SO comfy.
Wide calf boots for the fall and winter is a STRUGGLE for us plus size girls, too, and Morgan also said she finds killer options at Torrid every season. Katie said she recommends Torrid’s swimwear to every plus size woman she meets, so I’d say it’s probably pretty bomb.
13. A Beautiful Soul
Under the umbrella of the Altar’d State line, A Beautiful Soul offers gorgeous maxi dresses, comfy sweaters, and tons of jackets and coats perfect for the fall weather.
Amanda said she loves shopping at both Altar’d State and A Beautiful Soul and that their clothes are “beautiful and always in style.”
They also sell Capri Blue candles, so feel free to add some Volcano to every order you place.
14. JoyLab at Target
JoyLab is Target’s newest activewear line, and it is to DIE for. Noelle explained that it’s similar to high-end brands but at a much lower cost. High waisted leggings (good for both high intensity work and lighter workouts like yoga), workout tanks and tees, and supportive sports bras? We’ll take one of each, please.
15. Gwynnie Bee
Clothing subscriptions are all the rage, but they’re not always offered for plus size women, and if they are, they’re not always all that stylish. Then, along came Gwynnie Bee, and the rest was history! If you’re looking to amp up your 9-5 wardrobe, look no further — they have work basics, but they also offer so many options to change up your look and try something new for work. A new wardrobe is bound to spark some creativity, you know?!
Abby said that she found items she’d never thought to pick up previously, and she got to the point where she didn’t even want to send anything back!
Where do you love to shop?! Let us know in the comments below!

I Got My Tubes Tied at 28
This past March, I got my tubes tied. I was 28 years old.
For as long as I can remember I’ve never wanted to have kids. Some of my earliest childhood memories were of playing teacher. I would sit all my dolls up on my bed and relay to them the topics I had learned in school earlier that day. After their “lessons” were completed I would push them all away from me and would pretend to do whatever I thought teachers did in their child free time. Sometime I was a pop star, sometimes I was a fashion designer, sometimes I was a writer — but I was never a mother.
My whole life, women and men alike have smugly told me that not wanting kids was a phase, one that I would eventually grow out of. One time I thought I was pregnant. I had just turned 24. I was casually hooking up with some guy who made it explicitly clear that he didn’t want a girlfriend, but then he would treat my like his girlfriend, causing me to hang around him far too long. One day my period was supposed to come and it didn’t. It was late, and a few days later, it was very late. A week and a half later I realized that it wasn’t late, it just wasn’t coming.
I was petrified. I knew to the very depth of my soul that I didn’t want it. I knew with every fiber of my being that I didn’t want it now, and I knew I didn’t want it later. But after a cursory review of my options — abortion or adoption — I did nothing. I froze. I confided in my sister, who immediately told me to take a pregnancy test, a suggestion I ignored. A positive pregnancy test would have turned this horrific days long nightmare into reality, a reality I was not prepared to face fully. I was childishly hoping that if I stood still and waited long enough it would all go away. And it did. After the scariest 15 days of my entire life my period came with such a vengeful wrath. I spent the entire first night vomiting my guts out from the worst cramps I’d had in years. But I didn’t care, I was just relieved.
I have a fraught history with my menstrual cycle. From its onset, it has been a dreaded and painful experience through which I’ve had to grit my teeth and bear. It all started in 7th grade with cramps so intense that I couldn’t focus on class. High school was when the vomiting and all day diarrhea began (which was when my mom started letting me miss school because of the symptoms). The intensity of cramps increased with age, and by the time I was in my 20s they were so bad I would get light headed and occasionally lose consciousness. My flows were so heavy on many occasions I bled through a tampon and a pad and my underwear and my pants, and a even sweatshirt “discreetly” tied around my waist. As I got older the symptoms became worse. Hot flashes, cramps, and fatigue eventually had me bedridden for the first few days of every cycle. I’ve contended with all of this, with varying degrees of success, since I was 13 years old.
I was on the pill from ages 25 to 27. I was finally able to control my period with hormones not produced in my body, but manufactured in a lab. Unfortunately, the trade off was losing control of everything else. A few months into my new regimen I began to have wild and violent mood swings. Now, I’m the first to admit that I’m an emotional person. But the pill made me feel like I was losing my mind. There were countless times I felt myself getting irrationally angry, the ire boiling within me and I could do nothing to stop it. I also experienced weight gain to the tune of 20 lbs, an unpleasant and unfamiliar body odor, and consistent — but fortunately mild — cramps. After trying three different pills with three different hormonal dosages in 2017, I switched to an IUD. The little piece of plastic inserted into my uterus released hormones that stopped ovulation. This simultaneously prevented me from getting pregnant while also preventing me from experiencing any symptoms associated with menstruation. Essentially I tricked my body into thinking was perpetually pregnant and I thought it was the answer. But it didn’t help. I gained another 10 lbs, and on top of all of the other symptoms, I experienced incredibly painful sex which resulted in a complete loss of my sex drive altogether. Unfortunately, despite their benefits, I’ve come to realize that hormonal birth control was not the best method for me.
All of this lead to my decision this past March. At 28, I elected to have my gynecologist completely remove my fallopian tubes. There were two issues at play that determined my choice: my desire to not have kids, and my desire to have control over my body. I had been wanting to get my tubes tied for a long time. I mentioned it to my first gynecologist when I was fresh out of college, but he told me that I needed to wait and see if I would change my mind.
Six years later and after another pregnancy scare, getting married and experimenting with birth control that bogged me down with so many artificial hormones I felt like a prisoner in my own brain, my mind had not changed.
However, getting my tubes tied only partially eliminated my need for hormonal birth control. I will no longer be able to get pregnant, but I will still have to contend with menstruation and not having complete body autonomy (which means dealing with cramps and the other symptoms I was so eager to get rid of). But after dealing with the side effects of birth control, I’m prepared to revisit the symptoms of a painful period. I’m 29, and thankfully approaching the end of my peak fertility. I’m secure in my job and I am fully, completely, and utterly in love with the life my husband and I have created.
I know now more than ever that getting my tubes tied was the right decision for me.

Why Believing Survivors Is So Important
I want to start by saying that if this is a topic that is triggering or emotionally sensitive to you, click out and read this, or this or this instead. Your mental health is more important than what is in the news, and I urge you to spend some time loving and caring for yourself instead.
It’s in the headlines, in-office lunch conversation, and just about everywhere you turn. Sexual violence is more than a buzzword or a hashtag, and it has disrupted the lives of men and women all over the world.
Yesterday, September 27, Dr. Christine Blasey Ford gave her testimony to the Senate Judiciary Committee alleging that Judge and Supreme Court Nominee Brett Kavanaugh sexually assaulted her in high school. While many people have released statements of support and gratitude toward Dr. Ford’s bravery, she has also been met with immense scrutiny and even outright disbelief toward her testimony.
Unfortunately, this is not a new concept. Survivors of sexual violence often experience skepticism and incredulity when they come forward about their experience. Prominent players in Hollywood — Harvey Weinstein, Bill Cosby, Louis C.K., and dozens of others — have been exposed this last year, and it’s empowered and strengthened women by showing them that their attackers will not get away with it regardless of prestige or prominence. However, this case is finally an example of what happens when the government takes on #MeToo.
Why Women Don’t Report
In order to understand why it’s so important to believe women, we must understand the exact reasons why women are so afraid to come forward in the first place.
Sexual violence is violating and traumatizing, but it can also be very dehumanizing, which can cause significant feelings of shame and guilt to a survivor. One must grapple with the choice of exposing her own self-doubts and submitting to a test of her character or quietly dealing with the pain and emotional turmoil that her attacker roams free to hurt another person in the exact same way.
#WhyIDidntReport was created amidst the Kavanaugh accusations, and it showcases the various reasons women fail to report until years later or even at all. Some women say that they were scared. Some say that they thought no one would listen to them. Others say they blamed themselves for various reasons, including wearing a short skirt or drinking alcohol.
Why We Must Believe Them Anyway
Imagine you’re trying to tell someone something important, and the words just won’t come out. You’re moving your mouth, and you feel like you’re screaming at the top of your lungs. You’re yelling, shaking them to get them just to listen to you, but they can’t hear. They just sit and watch as you break your vocal chords just trying to get them to hear you.
That’s what it feels like to not be believed.
When we tell women that their stories aren’t true, or we say it’s “he-said-she-said,” we tell them that their assailants will continuously get away with what they’ve done. You can believe women without hurting the reputations and “smearing the name” of men. That’s why we have a justice system in our country that investigates and handles these situations unbiasedly.
When women feel understood and validated about their experiences with sexual violence, they empower others and tear down systems that have previously been set forth. It took a group of empowered, strong women to take down Harvey Weinstein, but because someone finally decided to believe these women, they were able to really make a change.
It shows young girls (and boys) that this behavior is unacceptable
Girls in high school are watching this trial. They are paying attention to the words we use to describe women who come forward, how the media interacts with these women, and how our government decides to proceed with these sorts of allegations. By choosing to disregard the statements of survivors, we tell these girls that what has happened to them or their friends is excusable.
What happens when a 16-year-old boy reads that one of our Supreme Court Justices “got away” with rape? This signifies to them that they can do this to other women, not be held accountable, and still gain power in society. This is dangerous.
They need support
When survivors of assault choose to courageously open up about the horrific acts they have gone through, our job should be to support them, not interrogate or speculate. Sexual violence is a tolling experience in itself, but being up-front about it is even more difficult. It takes guts to discuss something so private and emotional with another person, so these individuals deserve respect.
History repeats itself
This isn’t the first time this has happened, and by actively dismissing the claims of abuse, we tell women everywhere that this won’t be the last. Anita Hill’s emotional testimony during the Senate Judiciary hearings for the confirmation of Clarence Thomas in 1991 has been brought up multiple times the past few weeks. The Senate chose to disregard her testimony, and Clarence Thomas still sits on our Supreme Court today.
We saw that one could sexually harass a co-worker and still be elevated to the highest court in our country in 1991, so it tells that same narrative to men today. Clarence Thomas wasn’t thoroughly investigated, so boys and young men see that they can do the same. It’s a vicious cycle, and by continuously failing to uphold our duty to investigate these claims, we make way for it to happen again and again. By making the conscious effort to believe a woman, we are potentially saving others from the exact same harm.
What do we lose?
False accusations are rare. According to Rape Victims Advocates, 2-8% of false sexual assault claims are fabricated, and this is the same statistic we see with other crimes. While I understand the need for due process in cases such as Kavanaugh, it’s equally as wrong when people immediately disregard the testimony of a survivor. This is exactly what breeds our culture that tells women not to report crimes because they won’t be believed.
When I say we must believe survivors, it’s more than just omitting the accused’s testimony. It means taking the time to find out the facts and investing to a fair degree. If he didn’t do it in the first place, what do we lose by taking the time to be sure?
Men have been believed for centuries. It has always been their say. So, why can’t we choose to believe a woman for once? When we finally give a woman the benefit of the doubt rather than smearing her character and coming up with excuses as to why she could be wrong, we make way for other women to come forward with their own experiences of injustice. We empower women to fight and stick up for themselves. We show young girls that our country is made for them, too.
A sexual assault occurs every 107 seconds in America. As you finish this article, approximately two individuals have been assaulted. We must believe survivors or we run the risk of showing everyone in our country that those two people don’t matter as much as politics do.
If you have experienced sexual violence and are feeling triggered or just want to talk, you can call the National Sexual Assault Hotline at 1-800-656-4673.

How to Create a French Fall Capsule Wardrobe
“French girl style” is a universal term; everyone knows what it is, and yet you cannot totally define it. This is the magic of French girl style — you know it’s classic and simple and chic, but there’s an element of je ne sais quoi that makes getting dressed more of an art form than a routine. However, there are key pieces that will help you achieve that undeniably chic French-girl style, no matter where you are in the world.
These pieces must be comfortable enough for leisurely strolls, layered properly for whatever weather changes might happen in the afternoon (nothing is less chic than shivering from the cold or sweating from the heat), stylish enough for the best possible occasion (you never know who is going to take your picture or where you’re going to end up), and classic enough to be in style from Coco Chanel’s first runway show to Choupette‘s last Instagram — those are some big ballet flats to fill! Here are the pieces for fall that will help you achieve that classic, comfortable, effortlessly chic style that the French are so famous for. Now all you need is a spritz of Chanel No. 5 and your own je ne sais quoi.
Outerwear
Leather Jacket
When thinking outerwear, you want timeless pieces that will work over any outfit combo your closet can throw at them. A leather jacket is the perfect everyday layer over casual jeans and a tee but also adds a little pizazz to more feminine dresses or silhouettes. VERSATILE AND SEXY YAS PLEASE.
Classic Trench
There is nothing better than a really good trench — instant class.
Wool Coat
When I ascend to heaven it will be on the wings of all my wool coats — they may be my most favorite thing (after Peter Kavinsky, of course). While they can get pricier, a well-cut and classic wool coat is an investment piece in your future chicness.
Boyfriend Blazer
The perfect way to wear a blazer? Slightly oversized, thrown oh-so-casually over a tee and jeans. Add red lip as necessary.
Tops & Dresses
Striped Top
Is there anything more perfectly French than a really good striped top? I rest my case.
Silk Button-Down
Elevate your everyday button-down in luscious silk — take it from the office to after work drinks in a flash. Bonus: silk has this subtle luster that makes you glow while wearing it. This is not scientifically proven but you can trust me, cool?
Cashmere Sweater
There is no better basic for fall than a cashmere sweater. It can be remixed endlessly — on its own, over button-downs, over dresses, under blazers, tucked into skirts… it’s the wardrobe workhorse that also feels hella nice on.
Basic Tee
Speaking of wardrobe backbones, you don’t need me to tell you how essential a basic tee is to any capsule. Choose your own adventure with your tee depending on style/use: slightly oversized, boxy, tight and just-the-right-amount-of-thermal, etc.
Easy Dress
Choose a dress that you can easily take to the 9-5 or on a first date or to a wedding. This is your all-occasions dress that you actually want to wear. A unicorn dress, if you will.
Bottoms
Black Ponte Pants
Think Audrey Hepburn in Funny Face. Pair with a black mockneck, loafers, and tons of attitude.
Ankle Crop Skinny Jeans
Specifying an ankle crop style because they’ll be the perfect backdrop for your ankle boots, loafers, and ballet flats.
Leather Leggings / Pants
If you think you “can’t wear” leather pants, you are SO wrong. You can wear them, you fierce and fabulous lady, you. If you’re nervous, start with a legging style or “leatherette” jean that will feel a little more comfortable/normal and be a little easier on your wallet.
Miniskirt
To pair with black tights and a liberal dose of je ne sais quoi.
Shoes
Ballet Flats
Ballet flats date back to the 16th century — they are the epitome of classic. Go for the OG style, tiny bow and all.
Ankle Boots
Fall isn’t fall without a really good ankle boot. That is all. Or, more accurately, that is fall.
Heels
To pair with everything from jeans to formal wear. A good pair of heels is an investment — go for neutral colors in luxe fabrics and make sure the heel height is walkable while still giving you that extra lil oomph.
Loafers
Is loafer porn a thing? Asking for a friend.
Accessories
Sunnies
Think classic Céline — oversize, slightly squared off, head-turning.
Silk Scarf
Très chic, mais non?
Tote Bag
Go for a size large enough to fit your laptop, yet sleek enough to bring along to drinks after work if necessary. If you’re going to invest somewhere, we recommend starting with a great work tote.
Watch
Keep time without endlessly checking your phone. Plus, it’ll look great on the ‘gram (okay so the checking the phone thing needs some work).
Minimal Gold Jewelry
Understated jewelry lends a touch of polish and sheen — the perfect complement to everything from a finely tailored blazer to your knockabout jeans and tee.
